Manchester United were poor on Wednesday, and captain Bruno Fernandes has added fuel to a week-long fire with post-match comments following a 4-1 loss at Como in the UEFA Champions League.
Fernandes struggled — as did his entire team — as Michael Carrick’s Red Devils went behind in the second minute and trailed 4-0 before Joshua Zirkzee struck late for the visitors.
“It’s not the first time, we started on the wrong foot, and they scored very early,” Fernandes said, via TNT Sports. “Not much pressure on the ball, not really many good movements without the ball, many things going our way.”
He’d later say, “Conceding the goal very early makes feel going into game with a mood of defeat,” which seems like something a captain would play a role in sorting out, but we digress.
The above might’ve been the least pointed comments of the bunch, as Fernandes questioned why Man United didn’t press Como.
This is not a welcome bunch of comments coming from the captain just one week after Lisandro Martinez questioned club hierarchy about the composition of the team.
"I think sometimes we have to be more brave under pressure."

The captain was clearly unhappy with United’s approach to the game.
“It’s a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man and sometimes leave a little bit of space in-behind and trying to get the ball in the first moment, to wait for them, to give them the ballbut sometimes when you give too much of the ball to these teams they get confidence. They have so many bodies behind the ball they make you run a lot, make people get frustrated and when you recover the ball, the legs and the brain are much more difficult to make it work.”
Fernandes was asked whether he was implying that Carrick got the tactics wrong for the game.
“That’s on the manager and on the staff to see, it is not me,” Fernandes said. “Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, trying to take a risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable, as they did to us — the center back was sometimes coming to mark me all the way in my own half. We need to do that as a team but we were unable to.”
“A team that plays through the middle with small connections, if you give them too much time on the ball to think and to rotate on the middle of the pitch then they create a big space on the outside. That’s what they did and the goal, the first one, comes from that.”
A team and a coach can get through bad stretches together, but Fernandes and Martinez have both done very little to aid Carrick. That’s sometimes a sign that a ship has sailed. Will Carrick survive this slump?
