Atalanta and Frosinone share eight-goal thriller in Serie A classic

Atalanta and Frosinone produced one of the games of the season so far as they drew 4-4 in an absorbing contest, with the result leaving Atalanta with only one victory in their previous six league matches.

The hosts were looking for a response after losing to Ajax in Amsterdam in midweek, but Frosinone struck after only 25 seconds. A poor pass from Ederson allowed Romano Schmid to run through and calmly beat Marco Carnesecchi.

Atalanta responded before the quarter-hour mark. Charles De Ketelaere split the visiting defence with an excellent pass into the penalty area, where Nikola Krstovic slid the ball into the bottom-right corner.

Frosinone restored their advantage just over three minutes later. Fares Ghedjemis carved open the Atalanta defence before his cutback reached Schmid, who finished to claim his second goal of the afternoon.

The hosts continued to threaten and were level again shortly after the half-hour mark. Following a lengthy VAR review, Giorgio Cittadini was judged to have handled the ball inside the area. Ederson made amends for his early error by sending the resulting penalty comfortably past the goalkeeper.

Atalanta then completed their first-half turnaround on the stroke of half-time. Davide Zappacosta drove a low ball into the box and Krstovic converted for his second goal of the match.

Frosinone refused to be discouraged after twice surrendering the lead. They made it 3-3 within minutes of the restart, when a patient spell of possession ended with Giacomo Calo curling a superb effort into the net from the edge of the area.

The frantic rhythm continued and Atalanta moved ahead again only two minutes later. Krstovic picked out Eljif Elmas at the far post, and the midfielder powered his finish home.

Once in front, Maurizio Sarri’s side managed to impose greater control on the match and limit Frosinone’s threat, slowing the tempo as they attempted to protect their lead.

However, the visitors kept pushing forward and Atalanta looked dangerous on the counter-attack as spaces opened up in the Frosinone defence. Krstovic had a chance to complete his hat-trick after being found in the area, but Gabriele Calvani made an outstanding goal-saving block.

Atalanta defended well as they tried to secure the victory, yet Frosinone’s pressure eventually told with 10 minutes remaining. More than a dozen passes helped create an opening, and Aleksa Terzic finished the move by finding the far corner from just inside the box.

The points were ultimately shared in a match that both teams could feel they deserved something from. Sarri will be concerned that Atalanta are now three games without a win, while Frosinone remain sixth as their unexpected push for European football continues.

Flashscore Man of the Match: Nikola Krstovic (Atalanta).
