Former Fenerbahce forward Bülent Uygun has expressed concerns over Victor Osimhen’s recent performances, attributing the Super Eagles striker’s goal drought to his ongoing recovery from injury.
According to Uygun, the Nigerian international is yet to regain his full sharpness and competitive form following his recent spell on the sidelines.
New Telegraph recalls that Osimhen suffered a groin strain during Galatasaray’s 3-2 victory over İstanbul Başakşehir in September, forcing him to miss three consecutive matches across all competitions.
The injury also ruled him out of Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying fixtures against Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar, despite his initial inclusion in the squad.
The striker returned to action after the international break, featuring in Galatasaray’s 3-1 win over Kasımpaşa, where he provided an assist to help the Turkish champions secure victory.
However, Osimhen struggled to make an impact against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League, prompting further questions about his physical condition following his recovery.
Speaking to Tivibu Spor, as reported by Habersarikirmizi, Uygun suggested that the striker’s eagerness to make an immediate impact, coupled with a lack of physical coordination, has affected his performances.
“Osimhen operates within a specific tactical framework designed around his capabilities,” Uygun stated.
“His determination to accomplish much following his injury, in togetherwith his body’s insufficient coordination, and his inclination to express frustration toward his teammates over errors, including those of his own making, demonstrates he remains unprepared.
Uygun further stressed that the injury has played a significant role in Osimhen’s recent struggles, noting that the forward needs more time to regain his best form.
“Even in the chances he got, he struggled to maintain his footwork in 4-5 steps. He’s just returned from a serious injury, which is causing him to remain out of form,” he concluded.
