Man Utd have 9 left-field options if Carrick U-turn fails and Howe too expensive

The Red Devils are sticking by their manager for now - but what if that changes?

Manchester United have opted to stick by Michael Carrick for the foreseeable future. That's despite a dismal run of two wins from the first 12 matches this season, with United just one point above the relegation zone as things stand.

It's a risky move from INEOS, not least because players have been outspoken in their criticism of the manager and the club's hierarchy. United's fixture list doesn't let up either, with Chelsea, Roma and Aston Villa to come before the international break.

And if there isn't a sharp uptick in returns by the international break, Carrick could be given his marching orders in the not-too-distant future. Eddie Howe is a strong contender for the job, but it has emerged that sacking Carrick and appointing the former Newcastle head coach would cost Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co. millions. Millions that they might not be able to afford.

With Howe, Antonio Conte, and Julian Nagelsmann seemingly out of the question, Express Sport have picked out nine left-field options United could pursue as Carrick's replacement...

Rob Edwards
Let's kick things off with Rob Edwards. INEOS said that when they arrived at Old Trafford they were keen to champion homegrown talent. Edwards, whose most recent job was at Wolves, is a potential option if they wanted to appoint a British manager. Ernesto Valverde

Ernesto Valverde
Ernesto Valverde, most recently of Athletic Club, is one of the managers currently available. He has a track record of delivering results, as well as silverware. The 62-year-old Spaniard won two league titles with Barcelona and has experience at big clubs in multiple countries, including Barca, Valencia and Athletic Club in Spain and Olympiacos in Greece.  (Image: Getty)
Wayne Rooney
Let's face it, United love bringing back a former player, especially when times are tough. Wayne Rooney has been out of the managerial spotlight since leaving Plymouth Argyle, but it's unlikely he'd say no if given the opportunity. He hasn't coached since December 2024 so this would be a rogue move but he made clear the standards he expects in an angry rant about the club's current squad. (Image: Getty)
Robin van Persie
Carrick and Rooney's former team-mate Robin van Persie is another available coach. The Dutchman, 43, has been cutting his managerial teeth back in his home country of the Netherlands. He's been out of work since leaving Feyenoord earlier this year and could be considered as another left-field short-term option.  (Image: Getty)
