Penders error will not alter Chelsea plans, says Alonso

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso says the club will continue to trust goalkeeper Mike Penders after his mistake in the 2-0 Premier League defeat by Tottenham.

The match, played in the ninth round of the Premier League, saw Penders concede an own goal at Stamford Bridge in the 77th minute. The 21-year-old Belgian attempted to clear a corner with his fist but sent the ball into his own net.

It was Penders' first league start for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea must quickly recover from the result, with their next fixture coming on Wednesday, 28 October. Alonso's side will travel to Anfield to face Liverpool in the fourth round of the League Cup.

They will then return to Premier League action on Saturday, when Chelsea visit Manchester United.
