Camila Osorio Ends 2026 Season Early Due to Back Injury
Camila Osorio Ends 2026 Season Early Due to Back Injury

Colombian tennis player Camila Osorio announced on Oct. 17, 2026, via her social media channels that she has ended her 2026 season early due to a back injury. The decision rules her out of the upcoming Osaka Open in Japan and brings a premature close to her campaign.

Back Injury Forces Early Exit From Asia Swing

The physical trouble that derailed Osorio’s autumn schedule flared up most notably during the Dongfeng Voyah Wuhan Open in China. Having entered the main draw as a lucky loser following the qualifying rounds—after she had been eliminated in the final qualifying round by Katie Volynets and gained entry due to the withdrawal of Zheng Qinwen—the 24-year-old Colombian faced American Ann Li in the opening round. Osorio ultimately retired from the match while trailing 6-1 and 3-0 after requesting medical attention. This marked her third participation in Wuhan without getting past the first round, and her fifth career loss in seven professional encounters against Li.

Prior to her withdrawal in Wuhan, the back issue also hampered her performance at the China Open in Beijing. There, she overcame Thailand’s Lanlana Tararudee in the opening round before bowing out to American Coco Gauff in three sets, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-2.

Osorio opted to extend her recovery timeline rather than rushing back for the WTA 250 tournament in Osaka, choosing instead to prioritize her long-term physical health ahead of the 2027 competitive calendar.

Reflecting on a 2026 Season of Milestones

Osorio concluded her individual singles campaign with a record of 26 victories and 21 defeats, alongside earnings in prize money of $1,014,317, according to figures reported by ESPN. Her standout moment of the year came in January at the Philippine Women’s Open in Manila, where she captured a WTA 125 title—her first triumph in that category and the fourth of her professional career, following her three titles at the WTA 250 in Bogotá (2021, 2024, and 2025), a title she could not defend this year after falling in the second round. Earlier in January, she began her year at the Australian Open, where she was beaten in the first round by Ann Li with scores of 6-4, 6-7 (5), and 7-5. In March, she competed at Indian Wells, defeating Sloane Stephens and Iva Jovic before falling in the third round to Japan’s Naomi Osaka.

At Roland Garros in May, Osorio advanced to the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. En Roland Garros, Osorio alcanzó por primera vez la tercera ronda de un Grand Slam tras un duelo de tres horas y media frente a Yulia Putintseva. She also reached the semifinals of the Parma Open in May, and at Roland Garros she reached the third round before losing to Anna Kalinskaya, matching her previous best Grand Slam performance from Wimbledon in 2021. In hard-court events, she competed at the National Bank Open in Toronto, defeating Lucrezia Stefanini before losing to Ekaterina Alexandrova, and she exited the US Open in the first round against Aryna Sabalenka.

Medical Decisions and Looking Toward 2027

Addressing her supporters online, Osorio acknowledged the frustration of cutting her year short while expressing gratitude for the journey. “This year didn’t end as I expected, I had to finish my season earlier than planned due to a back injury, but I’ll hold onto very nice memories throughout these months,” the world No. 67 wrote.

Osorio chose to listen to her body to avoid more severe long-term complications, noting that she felt positive progress during her time healing. She also thanked God, her family, her close team, and her sponsors for their constant support. With her recovery underway, Osorio signed off her message with a clear message to her fans: “See you in 2027.”
