UG20: Ceylon Lions sweep Mukono Development to take charge of Group B

Ceylon Lions tightened their grip on Group B of the Men’s UG20 Cup with a double victory over Mukono Development Cricket Club at Lugogo Cricket Oval on Sunday.

Despite missing Charles Musemeza and Robinson Obuya, who are with the Cricket Cranes in Nigeria, the Lions proved too strong for their opponents, winning the morning match by 133 runs before cruising to a 10-wicket victory in the afternoon.

The double triumph came a day after Ceylon Lions secured two wins by forfeit against Wanderers Cricket Club, taking their tally to 14 points from 10 matches and putting them at the top of the Group B standings.

SKLPs are second with 10 points from six matches, while Pak Shaheens sit third on 10 points from eight matches. With all teams required to play 10 matches, the battle for the remaining positions is still open.

For Mukono Development, however, the wait for a first group victory continues. They still have two unplayed matches to account for, but Sunday offered little encouragement as they struggled against the Lions in both encounters.

Jayaratne anchors Lions’ morning win

Mukono Development won the toss and elected to bowl in the morning match, but Ceylon Lions made good use of their 20 overs, posting 180 for four.

  • Ceylon Lions CC 180/4 in 20 Overs
  • Mukono Development CC 47 all out in 15.1 Overs
  • Ceylon Lions CC won by 133 runs

Perry Wazombe and Ruwan Jayaratne gave the Lions a solid start, putting on 50 runs for the first wicket before Wazombe departed for 32 off 23 balls, having struck five fours and a six.

Ankit Patel added 22 off 24 deliveries, including a four and a six, before falling with the total at 110.

Jayaratne, meanwhile, held the innings together with a well-paced 74 off 56 balls. His knock included eight fours and three sixes and kept the Lions moving towards a competitive total.

Pascal Murungi chipped in with 22 off 15 balls, striking three fours, while Colline John Abong finished unbeaten on six from four deliveries. Ronald Omara was not out on one as the Lions closed on 180 for four.

Extras contributed 23 runs, including 17 wides and three no-balls.

Mukono Development shared the wickets among four bowlers. Kenneth Ogenerwot took one for 32 from four overs, Eric Matovu claimed one for 43, Victor Mugisha finished with one for 18 in two overs, and Edwin Nuwagaba took one for 36. Christian Mulindwa was the most economical among the bowlers who completed four overs, conceding 26 runs without taking a wicket.

The Lions went on to secure a 133-run victory, giving them a strong start to the day’s double-header.

Mukono Development crumble for 38

If the morning defeat was disappointing for Mukono Development, the afternoon match was far worse.

  • Mukono Development CC 38 all out in 14.2 Overs
  • Ceylon Lions CC 39 for no loss in 5.1 Overs
  • Ceylon Lions CC won by 10 Wickets

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, they collapsed for just 38 runs in 14.2 overs, leaving Ceylon Lions with a modest target of 39.

Nathan Sserunjogi managed one run before falling, while Steven Othieno made only two from 17 balls. Edwin Nuwagaba scored eight off 11 deliveries, including two fours, but the innings never gained momentum.

Kenneth Ogenerwot offered a brief contribution of nine off eight balls, including a six, but the wickets continued to fall.

Captain Victor Mugisha was dismissed without scoring, Christian Mulindwa made one, and Damadi Nassur scored eight off 18 balls. Eric Matovu added six, while Trevor Kyanja managed one. Mark Kiwanuka also departed without scoring, leaving Gomba Obama unbeaten on zero.

Extras contributed just two runs as Mukono Development were bowled out for 38.

Johnson Okabo and Brighton Muganzi did most of the damage, taking three wickets apiece. Okabo conceded 12 runs in four overs, while Muganzi returned figures of three for nine from three overs.

Musinguzi Mathew claimed one wicket for just one run in 2.2 overs. Muhammad Shehroz Imdad and Lav Pratik Shah also took a wicket each, while Kalana Desilva finished with one wicket without conceding a run in his only over.

Wazombe seals the sweep

Ceylon Lions wasted little time in completing the chase, reaching 39 without losing a wicket in just 5.1 overs.

Wazombe finished unbeaten on 28 off 21 balls, hitting six fours, while Abu Seguya supported him with nine not out from 11 deliveries, including a boundary.

The pair took the Lions home without allowing Mukono Development a breakthrough, completing a 10-wicket win and sealing a convincing double.

Ogenerwot conceded 29 runs in three overs, while Matovu gave away just two in his over. Mulindwa bowled 1.1 overs, conceding eight runs.

The two results left Ceylon Lions firmly in control of Group B, while Mukono Development were left searching for answers after another difficult outing.

Mukono Warriors book Group D playoff place

Elsewhere, Mukono Warriors secured their place in the Group D playoffs despite being without Gerald Olipa.

The Warriors swept their double-header against Iganga Cricket Club at Jinja Oval, beginning with a commanding 227-run victory in the morning before completing an 84-run win in the afternoon.

The two results confirmed their place in the knockout stage, with the Warriors proving they could deliver without one of their key players.

Ismaili Community, Kutchi Tigers advance

Defending champions Ismaili Community Cricket Club and Kutchi Tigers also booked their places in the Group A playoffs after winning both matches in their respective double-headers.

Ismaili Community began with a six-wicket victory over Tornado Cricket Club at Florida Oval before returning to win the afternoon match by four wickets.

Kutchi Tigers were equally impressive against Aboojo Cricket Club at Lakeside Oval in Entebbe. They won the morning encounter by 85 runs before completing a 65-run victory in the afternoon.

The results took Kutchi Tigers to the top of Group A with 15 points from 10 matches, while Ismaili Community CC moved to second with 12 points from just six matches.

Tornado sit third with six points from eight matches and have only two games remaining. They can no longer catch the leading sides, leaving Kutchi Tigers and Ismaili Community CC to progress to the playoffs.
