Chippa’s Truter unbeaten in the Cape
Chippa’s Truter unbeaten in the Cape

Chippa United coach Brandon Truter will take a proud top flight record to his home town at the weekend and says he is not appreciated enough in the Cape.

Struggling Chippa will be looking to turn around their fortunes as they meet Stellenbosch away at the Danie Craven Stadium in the Betway Premiership.

One potential factor in their favour is their coach’s record in the Cape as a top flight coach. He has a record of 9 games in charge with six draws and three victory.

Truter won promotion with Moroka Swallows in the 2020-21 campaign drew 1-1 away at both Stellenbosch and Cape Town City. The two draws formed part of the record 20 draws in 30 matchers that Swallows played that season.

The next campaign, Truter drew 0-0 at Cape Town City in the MTN8 semifinal and later in the campaign, after being fired by the Birds and then hired by AmaZulu, saw Usuthu to a goalless draw at City.

At the beginning of the 2022-23 campaign, AmaZulu beat Cape Town City 2-1 in the MTN8 quarterfinal before Truter was again sacked.

He did not have to wait long, however, for a new employer and at Sekhukhune United had a 1-0 win at Stellenbosch in the league and then a draw in the Nedbank Cup semifinal followed by success in their post-match penalty shootout.

The next season Sekhukhune, under Truter, won 2-0 away over Cape Town Spurs and 1-0 at Cape Town City.

In his 11 matches in charge at Richards Bay in the 2024-25 season, Truter did not have an away clash in the Cape and since joining Chippa United has not been back to the Cape until Saturday’s match at Stellenbosch

“I hope that doesn't change this weekend to Stellenbosch,” said Truter of his record.

“It’s up against Gavin Hunt, a very good coach but they had a game in midweek and
hopefully that’ll count in our favour,” said Truter.

Stellenbosch were 2-0 away winners over Durban City in the first round of the Carling Knockout Cup on Wednesday.

“But going to Cape Town for me, yeah, it gets personal. I've never coached in Cape Town except in the second division with Cape Town All-Stars. Somehow it’s like I’m not good enough in Cape Town,” he added.
