Liverpool defender 'expected to leave' in January before contract expires

Liverpool could let one of its defenders go in the January transfer window, with reports suggesting a loan and a permanent move are both on the table for one of the club's academy graduates

Liverpool may already be throwing its attention to the January transfer window, with reports claiming that one of the club’s defenders is expected to leave in the New Year.

There’s just over two months to go before the transfer window opens once again, and despite a steady start for the Reds under new head coach Andoni Iraola, there plenty of areas which could be targeted for some new additions.

Returning sporting director Julian Ward could therefore be kept busy in January, with plenty of names being linked with moves to Anfield - and reports suggesting that an exit could already be on the cards.

According to TeamTalk, Luke Chambers is “expected to leave” once the window opens, with a loan move being lined up for the left-back.

Scottish champion Celtic is said to be among his admirers, and are claimed to see him as a long-term project, which could lead to a permanent deal being considered.

Chambers’ contract is due to expire next summer, meaning January would be Liverpool’s last opportunity to receive a fee for the 22-year-old unless he is offered a new deal.

The defender has made one senior appearance this season, having come off the bench against LASK in the Champions League, while he has also been in the squad for games against Atletico Madrid and Villarreal, as well as last month’s Carabao Cup win over Tottenham.

Chambers spent the second half of last season on loan at Championship side Charlton, where he made 18 appearances, including 16 starts.

He did play a part in Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States during the summer, starting games against Wrexham and Leeds, but with Milos Kerkez and Kostas Tsimikas ahead of him in the pecking order at left-back, he was linked with a loan move away.

Liverpool FC have launched their new home kit for the 2026/27, inspired by iconic adidas strip worn during the club's 1989/90 title-winning campaign.

Queens Park Rangers were among the clubs claimed to have shown an interest during the summer window, as well as at least one overseas club, but a move never materialized, which leaves a curious decision to make in 2027.
