Dwight Yorke reaffirms interest in coaching Ghana
Dwight Yorke

Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has reaffirmed his desire to become head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars, citing the country’s footballing history and the quality of players available.

The Trinidad and Tobago legend is among the names linked with the vacant position following the departure of Carlos Queiroz, who left the role after Ghana’s disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The Black Stars suffered consecutive defeats against Ivory Coast and The Gambia in their opening Group C matches, leaving the four-time African champions bottom of the standings without a point.

Yorke, who previously expressed interest in managing Ghana, believes the national team has the talent required to succeed but needs the right culture and commitment from its players.

“It’s a job I’d be interested in, given Ghana’s history and the players available,” Yorke told The Guardian.

“You look at the squad and your eyes open even wider.

“The conversation started there and then reached the media before I really knew it.

“The talent is there. Build the culture and get the players to buy in, and the football will follow,” he added.

Yorke enjoyed a distinguished playing career, most notably with Manchester United, where he won three Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League during the club’s historic 1998-99 treble-winning season.

His interest comes at a difficult time for Ghana, who are seeking to revive their AFCON qualifying campaign after losing their first two matches.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports have appointed an interim technical team to oversee the Black Stars’ upcoming matches against Somalia.

The team will be led by Kim Lars Björkegren, with Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram serving as assistant coaches. Former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda has been appointed goalkeeper trainer.

The Black Stars are scheduled to face Somalia in their Matchday Three and Four fixtures next month, with the interim technical team tasked with guiding the side through both encounters.

The GFA and the Sports Ministry are expected to appoint a substantive head coach in November as Ghana attempt to get their qualification campaign back on track.
