Manchester City being found guilty of 114 financial breaches by the Premier League is likely to dominate headlines for the foreseeable future.
The verdict, and potential sanctions if the Citizens' appeal is unsuccessful, isn't just a big talking point on English shores. The news has spread far and wide, rocking world football.
Even New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has had his say on the matter. During a press conference on Wednesday, the American politician made sure to bring up Man City unprompted and make his feelings clear.
Mamdani's comments have gone viral on social media, mainly because he is a well-known Arsenal supporter. The Gunners will be waiting to see the outcome of the appeal, and are one of four teams to have informed City that they had reserved their right to seek compensation should they be found guilty.
When news initially broke that City had been found guilty, Mamdani simply posted '114' on X (formerly Twitter). With his club in direct competition with the Manchester-based outfit, he's likely to be keeping an eye on the situation.
And he's doubled down on taking digs at City, doing so again after they defeated Liverpool at Anfield. Piers Morgan labelled the match and surrounding situation a 'farce' in a furious rant on social media.
Mamdani appears to share that opinion, claiming the Citizens 'shouldn't' even be in the English top flight. Greeting a reporter, who is a Liverpool fan, the US Mayor said:
"How’s it going, how are you as a Liverpool fan right now?
"You got beat by a team that shouldn’t even be in the league, but anyway."
Speaking on GIVEMESPORT's Market Madness podcast earlier this week, Football finance expert Kieran Maguire claimed it would be 'dangerous' if Man City were expelled from the Premier League. He explained:
"I think it would be a very unusual vote. We did see Bury get expelled from League Two some time ago but I think that the other clubs would have to bear in mind that Manchester City would probably take legal redress and that could prove to be very expensive if they are expelled without the verdict being held and without the appeal. So it's a dangerous route to go down, but the weight of feeling does vary from club to club.
"Certainly some of the other elite clubs are very unhappy with the delay in the situation because they feel it has an impact upon their ability to qualify for the Champions League. I think some of the more mid-tier clubs who don't see Manchester City as a threat, their main concern is, is this going to further increase the already sky-high legal costs that have been incurred by the Premier League and and they don't want any part of it. So, they want a quick resolution and then they can get on with the rest of their season and focus on their own clubs."
