“As with every start of the season, there is a certain illusion in a very even, very competitive league where it is played very hard every night and generally the team that plays better and more intensely wins.”
That is the assessment of Sebastián Ginóbili as Villa Mitre opens its 2026-27 Liga Argentina basketball campaign at 21:30 local time on Tuesday against Pico Football Club at the Estadio José Martínez in Bahía Blanca, Argentina. The fixture marks the club’s eighth season in the country’s second tier, entering a division where small margins dictate outcomes.
Unlike many rivals who remained active in local tournaments, Villa Mitre followed a distinct preparation path over the seven and a half weeks leading up to tip-off. Ginóbili explained that the local tournament served primarily to keep players active and prevent a five-to-six-month layoff, allowing the club to prioritize the massive financial and competitive investment required by the Liga Argentina.
While balancing dual competitions poses logistical hurdles, the coaching staff emphasized protecting the club’s primary sporting commitment. The roster itself underwent a notable reshaping compared to previous campaigns, moving away from relying heavily on local league pieces to reinforce the senior professional squad.
Villa Mitre enters the opening tip with six confirmed senior player slots, featuring two prominent newcomers: Álvaro Yarza from Tandil and American Jahsim Floyd. Ginóbili noted that Yarza was brought in to inject perimeter penetration and high-energy play, addressing a tactical limitation from last season when the team relied heavily on verticality, inside scoring, and outside shooting.
The addition of Floyd, who arrives from the Colombian league, became necessary following roster shifts that included Franco Pennacchiotti relocating to the south for family reasons and Julián Lorca signing in Chile. Ginóbili stated that Floyd is expected to provide defensive presence and quality relief rather than act as an offensive savior, while the return of Javier Bollo provides vital frontcourt depth.
Reflecting on lessons learned from last season, Ginóbili adjusted the team’s approach to add intensity and incorporate new players.
Tuesday’s opponent, Pico Football Club, arrives with a heavily experienced veteran core featuring Rodrigo Sánchez, Joaquín Noblega, Juan Ignacio Rodríguez Suppi, Joaquín Ríos, and Lucio Reinaudi. It is a group Ginóbili categorized directly: “among the tournament’s leading contenders.”
