Carrick targets end to United’s eight-game winless run as Alonso’s Blues chase response to back-to-back defeats
Manchester United travel to Stamford Bridge for their Premier League matchday nine encounter against Chelsea, desperate to end an eight-game winless run in all competitions and ease mounting pressure on head coach Michael Carrick.
The Red Devils have endured a turbulent few weeks, with supporters expressing their frustration at the team’s performances and pressure mounting on Carrick following a disappointing run of results.
After a shocking 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League and Bournemouth’s 3-0 victory at Old Trafford last Sunday, the Manchester United hierarchy has backed the former midfielder to continue in his role.
Carrick will now seek a much-needed victory against a Chelsea side equally determined to recover from successive defeats when both teams meet in Saturday’s tea-time kick-off.
The United manager said his players were eager to improve their fortunes and understood the significance of the Stamford Bridge encounter.
“The boys are hungry. We’re hurting because we haven’t won enough games, but there’s a hunger to do better,” he said.
“Yeah, massively looking forward to it. It’s a huge game of football, two good clubs, good history. But more importantly for us, we want to pick up points, we want to win games, and it’s the next opportunity to do that.”
Chelsea head into the encounter following defeats to Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge and Liverpool in the Carabao Cup at Anfield in midweek.
However, manager Xabi Alonso insisted that his team’s preparations would remain unchanged, regardless of Manchester United’s poor run of form.
“For me, it doesn’t change. In any situation, we need to prepare the same way. We control what we can control: our preparations, our decisions, our mindset. We know they are a good team,” Alonso said.
“In the same way as against Tottenham, we said the table doesn’t matter; it’s too early to tell. United have a good squad, good players and a good manager. It’s going to be a tough game, and we will have to be a good version of ourselves to win the game.”
Alonso’s reign at Stamford Bridge has been encouraging, but the defeat to Tottenham, their first league loss of the season, denied Chelsea a chance to move to the top of the Premier League table.
Tactical set-up and key battles
Chelsea are expected to retain their preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, which Alonso has deployed in three of the team’s last four matches.
Former Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck could lead the attack in the absence of injured João Pedro, with Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers operating behind him.
Former Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana is also expected to start at centre-back, with Maxence Lacroix and Jorrel Hato unavailable.
Carrick, meanwhile, is expected to retain his 4-2-3-1 formation, with Bruno Fernandes returning to the No. 10 position after starting on the bench against Bournemouth.
Matheus Cunha and Amad Diallo could provide attacking support from the flanks, while Bryan Mbeumo is expected to operate as a false nine.
Noussair Mazraoui is tipped to start at left-back as United seek to exploit Chelsea’s defensive vulnerabilities.
Despite enjoying a higher average possession rate of 56 per cent compared with Chelsea’s 47.5 per cent, United have struggled to convert their dominance into goals.
The midfield battle could prove decisive, particularly with Fernandes expected to play a key creative role between the lines. Chelsea’s Moisés Caicedo will be tasked with restricting the Portuguese international’s influence and disrupting United’s attacking rhythm.
Chelsea’s defensive organisation will also come under scrutiny, having conceded 15 goals in eight league matches.
The flanks could provide another important battleground, with Palmer and Rogers expected to drift wide and cut inside to create attacking opportunities.
At the other end, Chelsea’s wing-backs must contend with Diallo’s pace and Cunha’s trickery. The Brazilian scored the only goal when the two sides last met, making him another potential threat to the hosts.
Both teams have shown defensive weaknesses in recent outings, raising the prospect of an entertaining, high-scoring contest.
United have conceded seven goals in their last two matches against Como and Bournemouth, while Chelsea have shipped three in their previous two games.
Alonso’s men will hope to exploit United’s defensive instability as they seek to return to winning ways.
Injuries and unavailable players
Chelsea will be without several key players, including captain Reece James, who is nursing a knee injury, and Brazilian forward João Pedro, who is recovering from a thigh problem.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez is sidelined with a broken jaw, while French defender Maxence Lacroix is recovering from a hamstring injury. Jorrel Hato and Jamie Gittens are also unavailable.
Manchester United will equally miss several players, including Benjamin Sesko, who is recovering from a long-term shin injury, as well as Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu.
Dorgu is nursing a thigh injury, while Manuel Ugarte continues his recovery from a knee problem through individual training sessions. Rashford is also unavailable.
However, United have received a boost with Kobbie Mainoo returning to training after missing the previous three weeks. The midfielder is expected to be available for selection.
What is at stake?
Recent meetings between the two sides have produced closely contested encounters, with Manchester United winning two of their last three meetings.
Both clubs have compelling reasons to pursue maximum points.
Chelsea will be eager to halt their losing streak and restore confidence after successive setbacks, while United need a victory to ease pressure on Carrick and revive their faltering campaign.
With both sides struggling for consistency and carrying defensive concerns, Saturday’s encounter at Stamford Bridge could prove a significant test of their ambitions.
