Harry Kane’s Ballon d’Or victory has been criticised by Lamine Yamal’s uncle, Abdul, who says the Bayern Munich striker did not deserve to finish ahead of the Barcelona teenager.
Kane won the 2026 award after scoring 73 goals for club and country during a remarkable 12-month period. His goals helped Bayern Munich secure a league and cup double in Germany, while he also led England to the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The England captain finished ahead of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe, who was second, and Yamal, who placed third in the voting.
Yamal, 19, won LaLiga with Barcelona and the World Cup with Spain. He also collected a third successive Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best player under the age of 21.
The result has prompted an ongoing debate over whether Yamal should have claimed the main prize. Abdul has now entered the argument, telling El Larguero that Kane’s victory was a mistake.
“I think it’s a mistake and very sad. My nephew is the best player in the world, everyone knows it,” he said.
“If you like football, you go to see Lamine, not Harry Kane. Kane is a great goalscorer, but Lamine shines on the pitch.”
Abdul suggested Yamal’s age had counted against him, while Kane benefited from having fewer years remaining at the highest level.
“As Lamine is young, he has time, and that’s why they’re not giving him this opportunity. Kane, with only three days of football left, has been given the opportunity,” he said.
Despite his disappointment, Abdul believes Yamal will eventually win the honour multiple times.
“I’m sure Lamine will end up winning five. In a few days, Lamine’s sadness will be over.”
