The verdict of the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents Panel for Man United vs Tottenham is now out, and there is near unanimity among the panel on the Rodrigo Bentancur red card incident.

While Spurs showed superb fighting spirit to battle back from a goal and a man down to salvage a draw at Old Trafford, there has been plenty of debate over the decision to send off Rodrigo Bentancur.

The midfielder has been handed a three-match suspension after seeing a straight red for allegedly head-butting Luke Shaw after the United full-back pushed him to the ground.

While not many have questioned the decision to send the Uruguayan off, some pundits have suggested that Shaw should also have seen red for shoving the Spurs man to the floor with force.

Key Match Incidents Panel agree with all big decisions in Man United v Tottenham clash

The Key Match Incidents Panel is comprised of five officials who review all of the week’s big decisions and vote on whether it is correct or not.

The Premier League have shared the results for Matchweek Six, and the verdict is that Stuart Attwell got his decision to hand Bentancur a red and Shaw a yellow correct.

The panel voted 5-0 that the Tottenham midfielder should have been sent off. The panel’s commentary reads: “The on-field red card decision was supported. The actions of Bentancur meet the threshold for violent conduct.”

While four of the five on the panel agreed that Shaw was correctly given a yellow, one official felt that VAR should have intervened and advised Attwell to send off the United defender.

Their commentary on the left-back’s yellow reads: “Shaw’s actions are aggressive but don’t meet the threshold for violent conduct. One panellist felt that Shaw’s push was with excessive force, so deemed the on-field decision incorrect and would have supported a VAR intervention to recommend a red card.”

Frank Lampard believes Spurs got lucky with Omar Marmoush’s goal against Coventry

There was another moment of controversy in Tottenham’s next game against Coventry, where Roberto De Zerbi’s side finally managed to register their first league win of the season.

The debate surrounded Tottenham’s crucial second goal, which came just nine minutes after Coventry’s equaliser, courtesy of Omar Marmoush, whose elbow made contact with Milan van Ewijk’s face before he unleashed his shot.

The Sky Blues boss said: “I did think that (VAR should have looked at it). I think if you roll and your elbows are that high and it connects with Milan in the contact it did, I thought VAR would cancel it. I did.

“You have to be really careful how you choose your words after this because there’s no point in getting after the event to get too deep into it. But I absolutely felt that.”
