Real Madrid defeated FC Barcelona 2–1 at the Camp Nou on Sunday, powered by a decisive two-goal performance from Kylian Mbappé. Le Figaro reported that the victory closes the gap in the championship, bringing the team under the direction of José Mourinho within three points of the leaders. Barcelona entered the 265th Clásico of their history defending a nine-match winning streak in domestic competition, but suffered their second defeat across all competitions following a midweek Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain.

Tactical Discipline Stifles Barcelona Attack

Barcelona controlled early possession through an attacking lineup featuring Raphinha, Lamine Yamal and consorts. Despite that pressure, the visitors executed a compact defensive block designed by José Mourinho to disrupt the hosts’ rhythm. Lamine Yamal struggled to find space against marker Marc Cucurella, limiting the teenager’s usual attacking output. The defensive organization forced Barcelona into peripheral passing, allowing the Madrid backline to absorb sustained pressure during the second half. Lamine Yamal produced a late attacking sequence in the 78th minute when a slight bounce in front of Lunin’s goal altered the trajectory of his shot and caused it to narrowly miss the frame, following a buildup initiated by Yan Diomande down the left flank before Mbappé received the ball centrally and shifted it to Arda Güler.

Mbappé Reaches Milestone Century Before Ballon d’Or Ceremony

The breakthrough arrived in the 41st minute when Kylian Mbappé inadvertently kneed a clearance from defender Gerard Martín past the Barcelona goalkeeper to open the scoring. Following an equalizer from Raphinha—who struck powerfully with his left foot in the 61st minute after a build-up led by Pedri—the match remained level into the final stages. In the 86th minute, Eduardo Camavinga surged through the midfield after receiving a pass from Arda Güler, slicing through the defense before setting up Mbappé for an easy finish into an empty net. The men under José Mourinho did not let themselves down after conceding Raphinha’s equalizer, successfully scoring the winning goal against the run of play in the absolute dying moments of the match. The strike marked Mbappé’s 100th goal for Real Madrid and his 8th in Clásico fixtures. The performance preceded the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony scheduled for Monday evening in London, where the France captain arrives among the leading contenders.
