The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has fired Lovemore Fazili as head coach of the Scorchers for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup because he does not hold a CAF A coaching licence.
FAM president Fleetwood Haiya has confirmed that Fazili, who guided Malawi to their first-ever Women’s World Cup qualification, will remain on the technical panel but in a different role.
Speaking to Zodiak TV, Haiya said Fazili would be among coaches attending a CAF A coaching course that FAM plans to hold between November and December this year.
However, by the time the course takes place, FAM will already have submitted the necessary documentation for the Scorchers to FIFA for the World Cup.
The decision comes despite Fazili’s contribution to the team’s historic achievement, having guided the Scorchers to a runners-up finish at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Malawi secured their maiden World Cup qualification after reaching the semi-finals of the continental competition, where they beat Ghana 2-1.
Fazili has also continued to lead the team in recent assignments, including their emphatic 7-0 victory over Zimbabwe in the second leg of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games qualifiers. The Scorchers won 9-0 on aggregate after a 2-0 first-leg victory at Bingu National Stadium.
Despite those achievements, the lack of a CAF A licence means Fazili will not lead Malawi at the World Cup in Brazil, with FAM expected to appoint a suitably qualified coach for the tournament.
