Carrick Crisis Deepens: Chelsea Crush 10-Man United as African Stars Struggle to Spark Revival

Chelsea inflicted more pain on Manchester United with a clinical 2-0 Premier League victory at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, leaving Michael Carrick’s position as head coach hanging by a thread.

Morgan Rogers’ brilliant solo goal in the 50th minute and Cole Palmer’s 64th-minute penalty sealed the win after Lisandro Martinez was sent off, extending United’s winless run to nine games in all competitions—their longest since the late 1980s—and leaving the Red Devils just one point above the relegation zone.

United started brightly and created the better first-half chances. Amad Diallo, the Ivory Coast international, looked sharp on the right and forced several saves or blocks from Chelsea’s defence, including efforts that tested goalkeeper Mike Penders and a one-on-one that went begging.

Bryan Mbeumo, the Cameroon forward operating in a false-nine role, provided energy and directness, linking play and nearly creating for Bruno Fernandes. Yet the visitors failed to convert their dominance, a recurring theme under Carrick.

The second half unravelled quickly. Rogers collected the ball in midfield, surged through a static United defence that included Harry Maguire and Martinez, and lifted a delicate finish over Senne Lammens. Minutes later Martinez, already booked, raised an arm into Wesley Fofana’s face at a corner.

VAR intervened, a second yellow was shown, and Palmer coolly converted the resulting penalty. United, reduced to 10 men, had no way back.

Among the African contingent, performances offered limited consolation. Mbeumo remained one of United’s more lively attackers and struck the crossbar with a fierce late volley, underlining why he has been the team’s most reliable goal threat this season with four Premier League strikes.

Carlos Baleba, the Cameroon midfielder signed for a substantial fee from Brighton, showed flashes of physical presence early but was substituted in the 58th minute after an impetuous challenge contributed to the opening goal.

Diallo’s first-half promise faded as the team collapsed, and he was withdrawn later. Leny Yoro, the young defender with Ivorian roots, was part of a back line that looked vulnerable once Chelsea found their rhythm.

The result piles enormous pressure on Carrick.

Appointed permanently after a successful interim spell that delivered Champions League qualification, the former United midfielder has overseen a disastrous start to the campaign.

One league win from nine matches, a nine-game winless streak, and a slide toward the bottom three have turned the Old Trafford hierarchy’s patience thin. Sources indicated he was given a stay of execution after the previous week’s 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth, with Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann among names considered as potential replacements.

After this latest collapse, chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” rang around Stamford Bridge, and few expect him to survive much longer.

Carrick himself admitted the second-half unravelling, noting his side “found a way of unravelling” after a positive first half.

He insisted he expects to take charge of the next match, but the optics—senior players missing chances, a needless red card, and another limp display—suggest the decision may soon be taken out of his hands.

For United’s African players, the afternoon highlighted both individual quality and collective fragility.

Mbeumo continues to offer a bright spark in a struggling attack, while Baleba and Diallo showed glimpses of the talent that made them key summer or previous investments.

Yet without a coherent team performance or results, individual efforts cannot mask the deeper crisis. As the Red Devils teeter near the relegation zone, Carrick’s job security looks more precarious than ever, and the search for answers—on and off the pitch—intensifies.
