Tottenham Hotspur are looking towards Barcelona to strengthen their backline, with two of the Catalan club’s defenders on their radar.

Just a few days ago, it emerged that Spurs had been impressed by Barcelona starlet Xavi Espart, who has delivered extremely impressive performances at right-back for the Catalan club at the start of the season.

The update claimed that the Lilywhites could face competition from their North London rivals, Arsenal, for the 19-year-old, who is allegedly valued at around €40m-€50m (£34m-£42m).

It turns out that Espart is not the only Barca defender who is admired by Roberto De Zerbi’s side, with another versatile 24-year-old also on their wishlist.

Tottenham could battle Chelsea and Liverpool for Gerard Martin

According to Fussball News, Tottenham are one of several clubs across the Premier League and Europe who are watching Barca’s Gerard Martin.

Martin has already featured nine times for Hansi Flick’s side and is capable of operating as a left-back and as a centre-back.

The report claims that Spurs, Chelsea, Liverpool and Inter Milan have all registered an interest in the 24-year-old, with the Reds said to have already obtained information about the player’s contractual situation.

Inter’s interest in Martín is said to be ‘concrete’, and it is revealed that Bayern Munich are also keeping an eye on the defender’s situation.

His versatility is said to appeal to all of these clubs, but getting him out of Camp Nou will not be straightforward.

Barcelona are working to tie down Martin to a new contract

Fussball News reveal that Flick rates the centre-back very highly and appreciates his tactical flexibility. The Barca boss has made it clear to his club’s hierarchy that he is firmly opposed to Martín’s departure.

The 24-year-old’s current contract runs until 2028, and his deal contains a release clause of €100m (£84m).

However, the La Liga giants have already begun discussions with Martin’s representatives regarding a new deal until 2031, and are prepared to hand him a big salary increase.
