Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to consider bringing Trent Alexander-Arnold back, believing the defender made a significant mistake by joining Real Madrid in 2025.
The Englishman has struggled for regular minutes, raising questions about his decision to leave Anfield.
Alexander-Arnold’s move promised a fresh challenge after years of success with Liverpool.
However, his Spanish adventure has disappointed, with Federico Valverde and Denzel Dumfries reportedly ahead of him in Jose Mourinho’s defensive plans.
The right-back has managed just four starts this season, while his appearance during Real Madrid’s recent 2-1 Clasico victory over Barcelona came only in stoppage time.
Speaking on The Overlap podcast, as reported by Madrid Universal, Carragher suggested Liverpool could benefit from reuniting with their former academy graduate, especially given their difficulties replacing his creativity.
“I would bring him back. I think he made a big mistake leaving.
They are playing a midfielder at right-back, so even in El Clasico, Denzel Dumfries, the first-choice right-back, comes on as a substitute,” Carragher said, as quoted by SPORT.
“So when you are the third option at a club, they clearly want you to look for a way out,” he added.
Carragher also highlighted Liverpool’s struggles building attacks through their full-backs, arguing that Alexander-Arnold’s passing and chance creation remain difficult qualities to replace.
“Ronnie (Ronald Araujo) has been fantastic, but we have a problem with the build-up play from our full-backs. We have certainly missed his creativity,” he explained.
Despite Carragher’s enthusiasm, a reunion remains uncertain. Alexander-Arnold is reportedly focused on improving his situation at Real Madrid rather than pursuing an immediate departure, leaving Liverpool’s potential interest speculative for now.
