Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester City reportedly held talks with representatives of Real Madrid midfielder Arda Guler over a possible move during the summer transfer window.
The Turkey international attracted interest from several English clubs amid uncertainty surrounding his future at the Santiago Bernabeu following the appointment of Jose Mourinho.
According to Madrid Universal, citing journalist Graeme Bailey, Arsenal and Manchester City contacted Guler’s representatives to explore the possibility of bringing the 21-year-old to the Premier League.
Both clubs were keen to strengthen their attacking options and reportedly presented their plans to the midfielder’s camp in an attempt to convince him to leave the Spanish capital.
There was a belief among interested clubs that Guler could struggle for regular playing time under Mourinho, potentially creating an opportunity to secure his services.
However, Arsenal and Manchester City were not the only Premier League sides monitoring the Turkish playmaker.
Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United also reportedly contacted his representatives at different stages of the year.
Despite the interest from England, Guler has remained at Real Madrid, where he has established himself as an important member of Mourinho’s squad.
The former Fenerbahce youngster is understood to have received assurances from the club’s hierarchy that he remains a key part of their long-term plans.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is also believed to be a strong admirer of the midfielder, further strengthening the club’s determination to retain him.
Meanwhile, Mourinho has demonstrated his confidence in Guler by handing him regular opportunities during the opening months of the campaign.
The midfielder underlined his growing importance to the team on Wednesday, providing two assists as Real Madrid came from behind to defeat Roma 4-3 in the UEFA Champions League.
His impressive performance in Italy further highlighted the qualities that attracted interest from some of England’s biggest clubs.
Guler’s future at the Bernabeu now appears increasingly secure, with reports suggesting he has agreed a new contract that will keep him at Real Madrid until at least 2031.
