Brentford have reported an incident involving a man who kicked a rugby ball into the Gtech Community Stadium during Saturday’s Premier League encounter with Liverpool to the police.
Footage circulating on social media showed an unidentified man kicking the ball from a high balcony overlooking the stadium while the match was taking place.
The rugby ball subsequently landed inside the ground, raising concerns about the safety of players, officials and spectators.
According to the Daily Star, citing the Mirror, Brentford have referred the matter to the police because of the dangerous nature of the incident.
The West London club described the act as “dangerous and potentially harmful”, although it remains unclear whether anyone was injured.
A club statement issued on Monday read: “Brentford Football Club is aware of an incident involving an item being kicked from a height towards the field of play during Saturday’s match against Liverpool. Such behaviour is dangerous and potentially very harmful.
“The matter has been referred to the police and the club is supporting the relevant authorities in their investigation to help identify those responsible and take appropriate action, which may result in criminal prosecution.
“The matchday safety of fans, staff, players and officials is of utmost importance, and the club will support all efforts to ensure action is taken.”
A separate video also emerged showing an individual carrying a rugby ball away from the pitch.
The footage was accompanied by a sarcastic caption which read: “Wrong sport mate.”
The incident occurred during an eventful Premier League encounter in which Liverpool came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Brentford.
Keane Lewis-Potter had given the hosts the lead with a header in the 44th minute before Yehor Yarmoliuk was sent off shortly before the interval.
Liverpool took advantage of their numerical superiority in the second half, with Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak scoring to complete the comeback.
Brentford’s problems worsened when Vitaly Janelt was also dismissed late in the encounter, leaving the Bees to finish the match with nine players.
