Arsenal Star Reveals He Was ‘Lucky To Be Alive’ After Terrifying Bomb Attack

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino has revealed how a last-minute change of seat may have saved his life when explosives targeted Borussia Dortmund’s team bus in 2017.

Arsenal Star Reveals He Was ‘Lucky To Be Alive’ After Terrifying Bomb Attack

Mikel Merino has opened up about a terrifying experience that left him believing he was fortunate to survive a bomb attack while playing for Borussia Dortmund.

The incident happened in April 2017, when three pipe bombs exploded near Dortmund’s team bus as the players travelled to face Monaco in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The blasts shattered the vehicle’s windows and injured defender Marc Bartra, who was taken to hospital with a fractured and severely cut wrist.

Speaking to The Players’ Tribune, as reported by Express, Merino explained that he had been expected to sit beside Bartra, but moved to the front because his legs felt tight and the seats reclined.

Merino’s Seat Change May Have Saved His Life

“I think I have an angel on my shoulder. I’m actually fortunate to be alive at all,” the Arsenal midfielder admitted.

Merino recalled the deafening explosion, the bus nearly tipping over, and seeing blood, smoke and frightened teammates in the aftermath.

He later discovered that a large piece of shrapnel had become lodged in the headrest of the seat he would normally have occupied.

“My usual seat. That day, the seat was empty,” he explained, reflecting on the decision that may have saved his life.

The Spaniard believes the experience changed his perspective, helping him appreciate life beyond football and cope with difficult moments in his career.

Arsenal Injury Tested Merino’s Resilience

Merino also revealed how the near-death experience helped him deal with a serious foot injury suffered last January.

The midfielder fractured his foot and eventually required two screws to support the affected area, with specialists uncertain about his recovery.

He admitted that he feared his career could be over after doctors struggled to determine how the unusual injury would heal.

However, Merino accepted the proposed surgery and remained determined to return to action, drawing strength from the perspective gained during the Dortmund bombing.

His story highlights the resilience that has helped him navigate both a frightening personal experience and a challenging period on the sidelines.
