‘He Wasn’t Touched,’ ‘Free-Throw Agenda in October’ — Hoops World Cries Foul Over Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Questionable Whistle vs. Spurs

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32 points in the Thunder's win over the Spurs, but disputed foul calls sparked backlash from NBA fans.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander opened the 2026-27 NBA season with 32 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the San Antonio Spurs 116-104 on Tuesday. However, a controversial foul call involving the reigning MVP drew reactions from basketball fans, reigniting complaints about how he’s officiated.

NBA Fans Question Controversial Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Foul Call Against Dylan Harper

Gilgeous-Alexander added 4 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocks in Oklahoma City’s victory while shooting 13-for-27, including 3-for-7 from beyond the arc.

One play in particular drew attention, where the All-Star guard apparently made contact with Dylan Harper. The latter was assessed a foul, prompting complaints from those who felt the contact didn’t warrant the decision.

House of Lowlights shared footage of the play and wrote:

“SGA got free throws for this. His whistle is INSANE.”

A fan argued that even disciplined defense wasn’t enough to avoid a trip to the line:

“You can play him as straight up as humanly possible and you’re still getting called for a foul.”

Another fan remarked: “They really gave him free throws for THAT. He wasn’t touched lol.”

The same fan went on to call SGA a “manufactured star” and argued that such decisions made the league look like a joke.

One viewer addressed the NBA directly and wrote, “Hey @nba how the [expletive] is this a foul?”

Another post read: “Shai free throw agenda in October of 2026.”

The backlash comes as the NBA enters the 2026-27 season with a renewed emphasis on offensive off-arm push-offs.

Monty McCutchen, the league’s head of referee development, outlined four factors officials will use to distinguish legal contact from forceful, space-creating extensions: feeling, firming, force, and full extension.

This addresses a different type of contact than the disputed defensive calls against San Antonio, although both concern how much physicality officials allow.

Spurs guard Stephon Castle also addressed the difficulty of defending the two-time MVP.

“Really trying to be physical with him, but physical enough to where you don’t bait yourself into a foul. That’s probably the hardest part,” Castle said, adding that containing Gilgeous-Alexander is “more of a team thing.”

Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 9.0 free-throw attempts per game during the 2025-26 regular season, making his ability to draw contact a frequent subject of debate.

In stark contrast to his rival’s 32-point night, Victor Wembanyama struggled in Tuesday’s rematch. The Spurs star finished with 12 points on 1-of-13 shooting and missed his first 12 shots

Oklahoma City built a 21-point halftime lead before holding off the Spurs’ comeback to start their season with a dominant win and will return home to host the Denver Nuggets on Thursday.
