Glazers 'furious' with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Man Utd chief's 'broken promises'

The Glazer family are reportedly growing increasingly frustrated with Sir Jim Ratcliffe's management of Manchester United.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe faces mounting scrutiny at Manchester United with the Glazer family reportedly dissatisfied with his stewardship of the club. Ratcliffe acquired a 25 per cent minority stake in United during 2024 as part of an agreement valued at approximately £1.2billion, with his INEOS organisation assuming responsibility of all football operations. The Glazers still retain authority over any prospective sale of the club. Under the arrangement, Ratcliffe also committed an additional £245million in funding, elevating his overall financial obligation to roughly £1.5bn.

The extra capital was expected to primarily finance off-field issues, like infrastructure improvements at Old Trafford, although on-field performances have shown scant evidence of meaningful progress.

The Glazer family, who remain watchful of developments at Old Trafford from a distance, are now believed to be disheartened by the way the club has been run under Ratcliffe's direction.

An insider familiar with the family told the Daily Mail that "it's a travesty and not what they expected or were promised," adding that "they have never run the club this way".

Supporters have observed that this appears to overlook the £1bn of debt the Glazer ownership has burdened United with throughout their lamentable tenure.

Meanwhile, ESPN revealed this week that the Glazers believe Ratcliffe "couldn't have masterminded a worse situation", and characterised his "downgrading in all departments" at Old Trafford as "the opposite of what he said his strategy is".

United's difficulties have persisted on the pitch, with the Red Devils currently on an eight-match winless streak across all competitions. They have managed only one Premier League win, representing their poorest start to a season in nearly 40 years.

The club sit just two points clear of the drop zone ahead of Saturday's encounter with Chelsea, intensifying pressure on those overseeing the football operations. United's continued troubles have also sparked debate over the club's true market value.

The Glazers had previously imposed a £4.5bn valuation on United when considering a potential sale four years ago, though that sum now seems increasingly hard to defend.

Despite this, the American family retain control over any prospective sale. According to their 2024 arrangement with Ratcliffe, the Glazers possess the authority to compel him to sell his stake, which has subsequently increased to 28 per cent, should they consent to offloading the club to an external buyer.

Ratcliffe would possess no authority to prevent such a transaction unless he equalled the bid and purchased the club entirely himself – a situation deemed extremely improbable. Despite reports surfacing regarding the Glazers' discontent, they are prevented from directly repurchasing Ratcliffe's stake.

Nevertheless, from next February onwards, the INEOS chief will no longer possess the authority to stop the family from offloading United at a price below the £25 per share he initially paid.

Meanwhile, INEOS has already begun reducing its football interests elsewhere. Swiss side Lausanne-Sport has become the latest to be placed on the market, while the group has also reduced its asking price for French club Nice.
