Kai Rooney, the son of Manchester United legend Wayne, has posted a message after responding to his Under-21s debut in the perfect way. The 16-year-old made his bow in Premier League 2 on Friday.

After making his way through the youth teams at United, he was part of the squad for the match against Nottingham Forest at Loughborough University. He was given a chance to make an impression when he was brought on with 12 minutes left to play.

At that time, the scoreline was 2-2, with United hoping that Rooney could help them to push for a winner. But, the game went the opposite way as Forest scored late to record a 3-2 win as he suffered late heartbreak.

The loss was the United development squad's first of the campaign in Premier League 2, having clinched victories in their opening three fixtures against Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Brentford. However, Rooney, had little time to think about the setback.

Despite featuring for the U21s on Friday, he was straight back into the starting line-up for the club's U18s the following day as they too faced Nottingham Forest. Rooney got himself on the scoresheet to hand United the advantage in the first half.

He was substituted in the 66th minute, but United were unable to hold on for all three points. Forest drew level in the 78th minute, with the match finishing 1-1.

Following the double header, Rooney took to social media to respond to his goal, sharing a picture of his celebration alongside a caption reading: "back on the scoresheet.'. It's been a busy few weeks for Rooney as he made his U19s debut just last week.

He came on as a second-half substitute in the UEFA Youth League clash against Atletico Madrid, a game which United lost 3-0.

He signed a two-year scholarship with the club back in July. The deal can turn into a three-year professional deal worth around £50,000 per year, plus an annual signing-on fee.

As Rooney was starting to make his own way in football, it had previously been revealed by his mum, Coleen, that he had to ban his dad from attending matches.

As Rooney began carving out his own path in football, his mum, Coleen, had previously revealed that he was forced to ban his father from watching him play. "Kai told Wayne to stop coming to football games, when he played grassroots tournaments and stuff because he used to get swarmed and he couldn't even watch the game," she said on I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here in 2024.

"How do you say to all of these kids, 'Go away, I'm watching my son?' Adults, it's different, you could speak to them. So he (Kai) just said, 'Oh, dad there's no point you coming because you don't even watch me play anyway.' Which is sad, but it can't be helped anyway. At the same time, the fans help you along the way and get you where you are."

Wayne has, however, since been spotted at matches, suggesting that the ban has now been lifted.
