Arsenal revive interest in ‘versatile’ La Liga star as Arteta eyes January reinforcements

Arsenal are reportedly considering further attacking reinforcements ahead of the January transfer window as Mikel Arteta looks to maintain the club’s challenge across domestic and European competitions.

Despite strengthening their forward options in the summer, the Gunners are continuing to assess potential additions who could provide greater creativity and flexibility in the final third.

Atletico Madrid winger Alex Baena has now emerged as a possible target, according to fresh reports.

The Spain international previously attracted Arsenal’s attention before moving from Villarreal to Atletico Madrid, and the north London club are believed to have renewed their interest ahead of the winter window.

Arsenal Interested in Alex Baena

According to FootballTransfers, Arsenal have identified Baena as a potential signing for January, with sources in Spain indicating that the Premier League side are revisiting their interest in the 25-year-old.

Baena was reportedly viewed as a player capable of offering a different dimension to Arsenal’s attack, including the ability to operate in a role similar to Bukayo Saka’s inverted position on the right flank. However, his opportunities in that particular role have been limited since joining Atletico.

The Spaniard’s versatility could be a major attraction for Arteta. Primarily a winger, Baena can also contribute in central attacking areas and has been deployed in several positions during his time in Spanish football.

His performances this season have further strengthened his reputation. FootballTransfers reports that he has registered five goals and three assists across competitions for Atletico, including a goal against Manchester United in the Champions League.

Baena’s progress has also earned praise from Atletico manager Diego Simeone, who has highlighted the player’s increased confidence and development since the summer. His comments underline the importance of the winger to Atletico’s plans, potentially complicating any attempt to secure his services midway through the season.

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta’s extensive knowledge of Atletico and the Spanish market could prove useful if the club decide to pursue the deal. Baena also has experience playing alongside several Arsenal players for Spain, including David Raya, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino.

However, any transfer would likely require significant negotiations. Baena is reportedly valued at around €42.6 million by FootballTransfers’ Estimated Transfer Value model, but that figure should not be mistaken for Atletico’s asking price.

Given his importance to Simeone and the timing of the proposed move, Arsenal could face demands considerably above that valuation.

Atletico have previously demonstrated a willingness to resist interest in key members of their squad, meaning the Spanish club’s stance would be central to any potential negotiations.

For now, Arsenal’s reported interest does not mean a bid has been submitted or that an agreement is close. The coming weeks should provide a clearer indication of whether the Gunners are prepared to turn their renewed admiration for Baena into a formal January pursuit.
