Scott Mayfield’s days with the New York Islanders may be numbered. The Fourth Period reports that the veteran defenseman’s tenure on Long Island could be nearing its end, with Mayfield unable to crack the lineup on a consistent basis to begin the season. He has appeared in just two games and was not expected to dress Tuesday night against the Anaheim Ducks.
Mayfield, who turned 34 last week, is in the fourth year of a seven-year, $24.5 million contract and holds a full no-trade clause this season, which drops to a 16-team no-trade list next year. He has not requested a trade to this point, but there is a growing belief that such an ask could come if the healthy scratches persist. Any move would require his sign-off, which may not be a tall order given his lack of playing time. Per the report, the Ducks, Kings, Blackhawks, and Kraken are among the teams looking to add on the back end, while Nashville and Toronto are also seeking help but targeting younger options. Mayfield posted 15 points (two goals, 13 assists) in 80 games for the Islanders last season.
