Coaches lament K3.5m Caf coaching licence fees
EXCITED—Avry

National Football Coaches Association (NFCA) has expressed disappointment with Football Association of Malawi (Fam)’s decision to hike the fee for Caf A licence coaching course.

The concern comes after Fam raised the coaching fee to K3.5 million.

The fee was, for some time, pegged at K200,000.

NFCA General Secretary Kenneth Kandulu described the fee as “exorbitant”.

“This is too much for the coaches. Very few coaches can manage to pay the fee. It is unrealistic,” he said.

KANDULU—We will engage them

Kandulu was quick to say the association was expected to engage Fam to consider reducing the fee.

“We will engage them. The fee was raised without consulting us. Fam could have raised the fee gradually,” he said.

In addition, Fam has set tough conditions for the aspirants, including that they must be actively engaged in coaching practice at the time of applying for the course, having completed a minimum of one full season of coaching practice since obtaining the Caf B Diploma.

Aspirants must also demonstrate computer skills.

Fam Communications Officer Collins Nsunza asked for ample time before he could comment on the matter.

A letter dated October 1, 2026, signed by Fam Technical Director Yvon Avry, indicates that those applying for a slot in the Caf C coaching course are required to meet some financial requirements.

Fam insists that while the fee for a coaching course was at a minimum of K100, 000, the association was spending about K3 million on one coach.

“It was decided that the participation costs should be adjusted considering the cost of living in Malawi and Fam’s financial resources. Even though the increase in coaching courses costs is significant, we are still the country where Caf coaching courses are the cheapest compared to all our neighbouring countries,” the letter reads.

In Nigeria and South Africa, applicants for a Caf A licence coaching course are required to pay $3000 and R 40,000, respectively
