Sunday's 28-25 home loss to the previously winless Miami Dolphins was the New York Jets' first true home humiliation of the season, a defeat so damaging that it may be enough to see coach Aaron Glenn fired.
After the Jets allowed the Dolphins to take the team's first lead of the season — yes, in Week 7 — New York fell behind even further, trailing 21-7 at halftime. The MetLife Stadium boo birds, perhaps on ice a little later than usual this season, finally emerged at full force.
While the Jets faithful peppered their team with a smattering of jeers throughout the first, the jibes grew louder during a tepid start to the third period.
Here is a full documentation, as heard from the Jets press box at MetLife Field, of the booing timeline.
"That might be the most disheartening half the Jets have played in recent memory, and with this team you know that’s a huge statement," tweeted Jets fan Mike Greenberg of ESPN.
A promising drive was stalled when New York quarterback Geno Smith took a six-yard sack in plus territory on a second-and-10. Cue the boos. As the Jets lined up for a third-and-10, Smith couldn't get his team set and took a timeout. Cue more boos.
Then, a checkdown to Garrett Wilson for three yards. Cue the boos again. On fourth down, kicker Jason Sanders had his field goal blocked. Cue the boos for a dramatic fourth straight play.
The Jets made a mini-run, scoring a touchdown and converting on the two-point attempt to bring the contest close at 28-25; the defense couldn't stop the Dolphins' run game, and New York never got the ball back.
