Alexis Mac Allister received a hostile reception from Brentford supporters during Saturday's Premier League game in London.
The Liverpool midfielder was booed by the home fans, presumably because of what happened during this year's World Cup in America. Mac Allister was a key player for Argentina, as the South American country reached the final, ultimately losing 1-0 to Spain.
Argentina defeated England in the World Cup semifinals in a heated affair, with Mac Allister at the center of the action. Several Argentinian players who play in the Premier League have been booed by English fans since returning to club soccer this season.
After beating England, Mac Allister wrote on Instagram: "For our country and for our people. We're at another end of the world. Let's enjoy every moment. Thank you for always being there."
England and Argentina have shared a long-running rivalry ever since the Falklands War in 1982.
The conflict started when Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory located around 750 miles off the coast of South America.
Argentina believed, and still does, that the Falkland Islands should be under its control. Britain won the Falklands War in 1982, and the two countries continue to dispute the islands' sovereignty today.
After Argentina defeated England at the World Cup, their players held up a flag that read "Las Malvinas son Argentinas," which translates to "The Falklands are Argentine."
England and Argentina are also rivals in soccer; the latter team controversially won their 1986 World Cup encounter when Diego Maradona infamously handed the ball into the net.
Mac Allister isn't the only Argentinian player to receive a hostile reception in England this season. Chelsea star Valentin Barco, who clashed with England's Jude Bellingham at the World Cup, has also been booed, and so has Manchester City's Enzo Fernandez.
Mac Allister, 27, has been a key member of Liverpool's squad since joining the Reds from Brighton three years ago.
The 2022 World Cup winner helped Liverpool win the Carabao Cup in 2024 before lifting the Premier League title a year later.
Mac Allister recently expressed his disappointment at not receiving a new contract offer from Liverpool, with his current deal expiring in June 2028.
"I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which, of course, makes me very, very sad," he said earlier this season.
