Lucas Bergvall’s long-term future at Tottenham Hotspur is far from guaranteed, even though the midfielder only recently signed a new contract.

Bergvall signed a new long-term deal at Spurs last month, and according to various reports, the midfielder has received a substantial pay rise.

However, the news of the new deal came out of nowhere, and it surprised many people, especially given that the 20-year-old had his heart set on leaving N17 in search of regular football at one point in the summer window.

Many may have wondered why Bergvall changed his mind and committed his future to the club despite not managing to establish himself as a regular in Tottenham’s starting eleven yet. It turns out that the midfielder’s new deal has a catch.

Barcelona and two others want Lucas Bergvall: Tottenham contract contains a release clause

Speaking to the Swedish media during the last international break, Bergvall refused to confirm or deny that his Spurs contract contains a release clause.

Journalist Ekrem Konnur has now claimed that the midfielder’s deal does not contain a release clause, which is valid from 2027, but he does not say how much the clause is worth.

He states that Barcelona, Juventus and Napoli are planning moves for the Tottenham youngster. In the Bianconeri’s case, they want him in January, but only if Spurs are willing to sanction a loan deal.

Konnur makes it clear that as things stand, De Zerbi’s men have no intention to sell the Swedish international.

A release clause protects Bergvall’s value but also limits Spurs’ upside

Many will wonder why Tottenham agreed to insert a release clause in Bergvall’s deal when his previous contract did not have one.

The North London club would have wanted to protect themselves against the midfielder’s value dropping each window, and the release clause has now essentially set a base fee for the midfielder were he to leave next summer.

However, this also means that if Bergvall explodes at Tottenham and fulfils his potential, Spurs may not get full value in the transfer market.

One would hope that Bergvall’s release clause is set around the £80m-£100m range, and not at around £60m.
