Valtteri Bottas’ future with Cadillac is seemingly under threat for 2027, despite having signed a multi-year deal with the team.
Bottas joined F1’s 11th team alongside Sergio Perez for 2026 on multi-year contracts. This would seemingly confirm the pair will be on the grid for 2027, but the Finn’s future is now in doubt.
Cadillac are yet to score their first F1 point, and their drivers can only do so much with the package they have. But Bottas has been noticeably trailing his teammate this season, having broken into the top 15 just once, while Perez has finished there six times.
Rumours have persistently stated that Bottas could lose his seat for 2027, with several drivers vying for his seat. The likes of Yuki Tsunoda and Esteban Ocon have been linked this year, but it has been said that Cadillac will not sign Ocon after his exit from Haas.
Liam Lawson has contacted Cadillac as his future with Racing Bulls hangs in the balance with Nikola Tsolov making himself known in Formula 2.
Another possible candidate is reserve driver Colton Herta, and Cadillac have made no secret of the fact that they would like an American driver in their car at some point.
The former IndyCar star has had a disastrous F2 campaign, sitting 19th in the standings with 26 points, but Cadillac are still pushing to get him an FIA superlicence. Herta took part in FP1 at COTA, finishing the session in 21st.
The American wants a seat on the F1 grid in 2027, but journalist Lawrence Barretto has heard from Cadillac that Bottas is still doing the job that is expected from him.
He said on F1TV after the United States GP, which Bottas failed to finish: “So on paper, both of them signed multi-year deals when they joined the team. But the term ‘multi-year deal’, it doesn’t mean what it used to mean.
“And it kind of means that you have to activate an option, and the team haven’t decided whether or not they’re going to activate it.
“Now, everything I’m hearing from the team is that Valtteri is still doing the job that they want them to do. But equally, they’ve never been shy of the fact that they want an American driver in the car.
“And that’s why with Colton Herta in the team, he’s going to be doing another FP1 to get enough points to get a superlicense, he suddenly becomes in the frame and they’d want to get him in the car obviously as soon as possible.
“So at the moment it’s Bottas who’s still most likely to be in that car, but I think there is some consideration within that team that maybe they promote Herta for next season alongside Checo.”
Pit lane reporter Ted Kravitz also had a positive update on Bottas’ future. While Cadillac boss Marcin Budkowski did not say that his drivers would stay for 2027 in Austin, they are in fact expected to keep their seats.
He said on Ted’s Notebook: “Marcin Budkovski, the team boss, was asked whether he could confirm that Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez will continue [with] Cadillac next year – he didn’t do that.
“He didn’t take the opportunity to do that in the press conference. Maybe he wasn’t empowered to do it, I don’t know. But it does look like they’re going to stick with Bottas and Perez for next year.”
