DeVaux Heavyweights Top Keeneland Worktab
Golden Tempo breezing Friday at Keeneland | Sarah Andrew

It was a busy Friday morning for Breeders' Cup workers at the championship's host site, with top sophomore colts from the barn of Cherie DeVaux front and center with half-mile moves.

'TDN Rising Star' presented by Hagyard Golden Tempo (Curlin) drilled a half-mile in :48.40 with Jose Ortiz in the irons, his final spin ahead of next Saturday's $7-million GI Breeders' Cup Classic. The son of Carrumba (Bernardini) emerged from the Rice Road barn area following the first renovation break at 7:30 a.m. and he worked inside of Oct. 3 maiden winner Commentate (Candy Ride {Arg}).

“Very good,” said Ortiz, who sticks with the GI Kentucky Derby and GI Belmont Stakes winner over G1 Dubai World Cup and GI Stephen Foster Stakes hero Magnitude (Not This Time). “Easy today, just a maintenance work.”

'TDN Rising Star' Englishman (Maxfield) is the likely heavy favorite for next Saturday's GI Breeders' Cup Sprint on the back of victories in the GI Woody Stephens Stakes and GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes, both over seven furlongs. One of the first to hit the track at 5:30, the C R K Runner posted the morning's fastest time for four furlongs, stopping the clock in :47.20 (1/85).

Espoir USA's Napoleon Solo (Liam's Map) breezed five-eighths of a mile in 1:00.40 with his regular exercise rider Emily Ellingwood in the irons for trainer Chad Summers. Victorious earlier this year in the GI Preakness Stakes and runner-up in the GI Haskell Stakes and GI Travers Stakes, the gray colt is cross-entered for both the Classic and the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, with all signs pointing at a start in the main event.

“We were just trying to keep him in the clear, on his own,” said Summers. “We didn't want him out there trying to catch the other horses out there. The play was to stay even, work by himself and he did it.”

In other morning activity at Keeneland:

  • 'TDN Rising Star' presented by Hagyard American History (Constitution), winner of the local GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity on Oct. 3, and Damavand (Not This Time), who graduated over the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile course and distance one day later, worked together Friday morning and were clocked a half-mile in :48.60 for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher.

“I'm very happy with the breezes,” he said. “It went the way we hoped it would. We didn't want to go quite as quick as last week. We just wanted a nice breeze, which we accomplished.”

Pletcher's four other Breeders' Cup hopefuls breezed in pairs Friday morning. Repole Stable maiden Badittude (Uncle Mo) and 'TDN Rising Star' Life Changing (Life Is Good) went a half in :48.80 for the GI Juvenile Fillies, while MGSP maiden Bold Leadership (Not This Time) and GIII With Anticipation Stakes winner Liam's Law (Colonel Liam) were timed in :49.40 as they prepare for the GI Juvenile Turf.

  • Emphatic (Nyquist), expected to be one of the favorites for the GI Juvenile Fillies courtesy of her game victory in the GI Darley Alcibiades Stakes on Oct. 2, drew away from stablemate Supreme Commander (Oscar Performance), getting four furlongs in :48.40. Supreme Commander was given :48.60. “She moved very well, galloped out nicely. We're very happy with how she went,” said trainer Brendan Walsh.
  • Morplay Racing's defending GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint heroine and 'TDN Rising Star' Shisospicy (Mitole) went an easy three furlongs in :38.60 for trainer Jose D'Angelo.
