Nigeria’s Flamingos will open their 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup challenge against Poland on Friday, October 17, at Pitch 4 of the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Morocco.
Nigeria arrive in Morocco determined to better their result from the previous tournament, when Italy ended their run with a 4-0 Round of 16 victory. The Flamingos negotiated a demanding qualification route, beating both Guinea and Benin Republic to book their World Cup place.
They demonstrated considerable attacking quality during the qualifiers, finding the net regularly on their route to the finals.
Poland are back at the competition following their absence from the 2025 edition. Their most recent appearance came in the Dominican Republic in 2024, where they advanced to the quarter-finals before being beaten by eventual winners Korea DPR.
The Group B opener will be the first U-17 women’s meeting between Nigeria and Poland. Along with Puerto Rico and title holders Korea DPR, both sides face a challenging group-stage schedule.
A positive opening result could prove particularly important for Nigeria, who won bronze at the 2022 tournament and are seeking a longer run this time around.
In a related development, the Nigeria Football Federation on Wednesday concluded a compulsory integrity briefing for every player and staff member selected for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The programme underlined the federation’s zero-tolerance stance on match manipulation and was intended to ensure all members of the delegation can identify and refuse any corrupt approach linked to fixing.
NFF’s Integrity Unit led the session, outlining the dangers associated with match manipulation, the tactics fixers may use to contact players, and the penalties that can affect both individuals and teams involved in any form of manipulation-related corruption.
The briefing forms part of FIFA’s wider tournament-monitoring programme for the 2026 U-17 Women’s World Cup. The plan includes advanced betting surveillance, intelligence cooperation with law-enforcement agencies and ongoing integrity assistance throughout the competition.
