Manchester United are planning to strengthen their defensive options over the next two transfer windows after prioritising attacking and midfield reinforcements in recent seasons.
Carrick has acknowledged that opportunities could emerge in January, with the club keen to improve the squad despite uncertainty surrounding their immediate transfer plans.
“We’ll definitely be looking at that and trying to come out stronger in whatever way that looks like,” Carrick told Sky Sports ahead of United’s trip to Leeds.
The comments come after Lisandro Martinez publicly questioned the club’s ambition following their summer transfer business, adding to growing frustration among supporters.
United are expected to focus on recruiting centre-backs and a left-back as the next stage of their squad-building process.
Luke Shaw’s injury problems have exposed the lack of depth on the left, with youngster Ayden Heaven deputising out of position.
The club previously explored signing Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall as a long-term successor to Shaw, but Newcastle refused to sell before the defender signed a new contract.
Martinez’s future is also uncertain, with his current deal expiring at the end of the season and United holding an option to extend it.
Carrick, meanwhile, remains under pressure after a five-game winless run, although he insists his focus is on improving results and building a stronger team.
“I’m desperate to get this club to where we feel we belong,” he said, stressing that United must earn their return to the top.
With January approaching, United’s defensive shortcomings could shape their transfer strategy as Carrick looks to strengthen the squad and revive the club’s season.
