René van der Gijp is disappointed that Tijjani Reijnders no longer plays in a top European league, as he makes clear on Monday in KieftJansenEgmondGijp. He wishes the 39-cap Netherlands international had not chosen Al-Qadisya last summer.
Ambitious Al-Qadisya paid Manchester City around €60 million for the midfielder a few months ago. Reijnders signed a four-year contract with the club.
Reijnders has made a strong start at Al-Qadisya. The 28-year-old Dutchman has scored nine goals and provided three assists in 14 appearances. Last week, he hit a hat-trick against Al-Riyadh in a 6-0 win.
"When you're watching AC Milan against Inter and you see the atmosphere, and then you see Tijjani Reijnders playing in empty stadiums," says Van der Gijp, lamenting the midfielder's move from Manchester City to the Saudi Pro League.
"You can celebrate, but nobody celebrates with you," the pundit continues. "Because the people who are there, I think, are people who work there. They get a free ticket. They're people from Vietnam and all those sorts of countries. That's sad."
Presenter Michel van Egmond adds: "They always have the idea that they'll fill their coffers and then return to Europe. But I wonder whether they can."
Reijnders made a good start to his time at Manchester City last season. Pep Guardiola almost always picked him, although the midfielder increasingly found himself on the bench in England as time went on.
