Franz Carr thinks Nottingham Forest made transfer mistake with one star ‘a bag of nerves’

Nottingham Forest only made five summer signings with Oliver Glasner prioritising quality over quantity.

The Reds lost 1-0 to Arsenal at the weekend. Glasner’s 3-4-2-1 is taking some time to bed in, and supporters are growing a little frustrated with the time it’s taking for Forest to get points on the board.

Liam Delap was criticised by Troy Deeney after his shot-shy approach during the Arsenal defeat. Chris Wood was also hammered by Ian Wright for his inability to get shots away despite getting into good positions.

Would you prefer Oliver Glasner to try this for a few games or stick with his 3-4-2-1?

Franz Carr played for Forest during Brian Clough’s time at the football club, and he believes it’s becoming clearer that the Reds missed a trick in the summer transfer market, with one player starting to struggle.

Franz Carr has doubts over Matz Sels

There have been a number of reservations held over Sels this season. His form does seem to have tailed off to a certain degree with the player starting to look like the 34-year-old goalkeeper that he is.

Last season, Sels played his best football when Stefan Ortega came in as a backup. The pair shared around the goalkeeping responsibilities, and it made the Belgian up his game as the club’s Premier League custodian.

Carr thinks the Reds should have tried harder to keep Ortega around and thinks Sels is definitely struggling with a confidence crisis at the moment.

He told the Forest Focus podcast: “If we turn up like we did against Arsenal, we will get more wins than losses. I like the way the defensive unit works. I’m still not sure about Matz Sels.

“I think he’s a bag of nerves at the moment – I don’t know why – you don’t feel confident with him. Look at what he was like last season; he seemed a shadow of himself, and I thought they might have kept Ortega because he was brilliant last season.”

Forest do have to get some irons in the fire when it comes to a new goalkeeper. Sels is coming to the end of his time at the City Ground, and the Reds have to get the addition of a new stopper right.

Sels is the number one stopper for now. With John Victor yet to prove himself, he’s hardly got any real competition, and perhaps some complacency is now creeping into his performance levels.

Glasner will have some thinking to do ahead of the January transfer window. Sels does need to improve his form a little bit if he’s to enjoy the gloves for the whole season and avoid being replaced when transfers are permitted once again.
