'I have something unresolved': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer piles more pressure on old pal Michael Carrick as he says he WOULD manage Man United again - despite trying to back him to succeed

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that he would be interested in returning as Manchester United manager in the future as he has 'something unresolved'.

Pressure is mounting on current head coach Michael Carrick as the Red Devils' dismal season continues to go from bad to worse.

After losing 2-0 at Chelsea on Saturday afternoon, United sit 17th in the Premier League - only above 18th-placed Crystal Palace on goal difference and just two points ahead of bottom side Sunderland.

Solskjaer has been in the Old Trafford hotseat before with his own path mirroring Carrick's from being an interim manager initially to becoming a permanent appointment.

The Norwegian had Carrick among his backroom staff before he was sacked as United boss in November 2021. When Ruben Amorim was sacked in January, both were interviewed as interim successors before Carrick was chosen.

And speaking about taking the reins at United in the future, Solskjaer revealed he would accept it.

'Going back to what has been is not always as good,' he told Norwegian outfit TV2.

'Yes, I had lined up [as Manchester United's interim manager last season], but I didn't think it would last longer than the summer. It was probably time for someone else to try.

'I also feel like I have something unresolved. Of course it would have been nice to have the opportunity again.'

Elaborating further, Solskjaer was keen to stress that he is not looking to oust his former United team-mate and friend Carrick.

'If Michael does well for 10 years and decides to quit, and they ask me if I can take them for two months, of course I wouldn't say no. I've been at that club for 18-19 years, so it's part of the family. But it's not something I'm thinking about.'

Despite growing scrutiny on Carrick, Solskjaer is adamant that the under-fire head coach can turn around the club's fortunes.

'Michael has what it takes to take that club forward. I think he's the right man. He understands the club, understands the fans and knows what's needed.'

Proof will be in the pudding with Carrick preparing his side for Tuesday's Champions League clash with Roma and then Sunday's Premier League encounter versus Aston Villa, both at Old Trafford, before the international break.
