Chelsea have reportedly identified Benfica full-back Daniel Banjaqui as a leading January target, though Arsenal and Liverpool are also said to be monitoring the teenager, according to TEAMtalk.
Who Is Daniel Banjaqui?
The 18-year-old Portugal U21 international is the latest talent to emerge from Benfica’s celebrated academy, which previously produced Joao Felix and Joao Neves. Football talent scout Jacek Lukig has labelled him “outstanding”.
Jose Mourinho handed him a senior debut in a 2-0 Taca de Portugal victory over Farense in December 2025. He has since made six first-team appearances, impressing in Benfica’s 2-0 Champions League win against AC Milan, where he completed 33 of 39 passes and recorded seven tackles.
Chelsea’s Interest and the £38m Valuation
TEAMtalk claims the Blues will be among January’s busiest spenders, with Reece James’s injury prompting the search for right-back reinforcements. Benfica may reportedly consider a sale if their £38m valuation is met, and Chelsea could even trigger his clause.
Competition From Arsenal and Liverpool
Both Premier League rivals are said to be tracking his progress, so a bidding battle cannot be ruled out.
Fit With Chelsea’s Youth Strategy
Banjaqui suits Xabi Alonso’s youth-focused model, following the successful recruitment of Cole Palmer and Estevao Willian. However, Malo Gusto and new signing Marco Palestra already provide right-back cover.
In our view, Chelsea’s depth makes this a question of long-term planning rather than immediate necessity. Landing a rising talent before rivals pounce could prove shrewd business, but the Blues must weigh whether another young defender fits their squad balance.
