Back
Manchester City are back in Champions League action tonight with AEK Athens the opponent at the Etihad Stadium – and Erling Haaland is a doubt for the game.
Manchester City won at the weekend in the Premier League, beating Ipswich Town 3-2 to make it seven wins out of seven under Enzo Maresca.
But last time out in the Champions League, City lost 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain. Ultimately, despite a great second-half display, City gave themselves too much to do and must now get back on track as AEK come to town.
The win over Ipswich came at a potential cost, with Erling Haaland limping off during injury-time after a collision with Jack Clarke. He was not seen in City training ahead of the clash with AEK, raising doubts about his involvement.
Antoine Semenyo has also been ruled out for eight weeks, so changes will be afoot this evening.
Would you make any changes to this potential XI..?
Gianluigi Donnarumma should keep his place, and it’d be no surprise if Maresca went with the defence that started the second-half against PSG.
Matheus Nunes came in and made a difference. Against PSG, Abdukodir Khusanov was better when he moved inside, but perhaps Ruben Dias and Marc Guehi will continue in the middle, with Josko Gvardiol to come back in for Nico O’Reilly.
In midfield, it would be a shame to see anything other than Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Enzo Fernandez, after the trio looked so good against PSG. There was a lot more balance with those three, and injuries up top give Maresca the chance to field it.
Rayan Cherki could move out to the right side following Semenyo’s injury. He was criticised for his display against PSG, but perhaps he could come back in here after being an unused substitute against Ipswich.
On the left, Iliman Ndiaye might get the nod over Jeremy Doku after such a superb impact against PSG. He also looked great against Ipswich and at the moment it feels like he’s playing too well to be left out.

And then through the middle, if Erling Haaland cannot play, Phil Foden seems to be the most viable option.
We’ve seen him operate as a false nine before and Maresca has even said before this game that Foden is an option, saying: “He [Foden] played in the past in that position, so he can play there now again. But again, at the moment, the number nine is Erling.”
Buoyed by his goal against Ipswich, Foden will surely be champing at the bit to start again in the Champions League, and score his first goal in the competition for almost a year.
In terms of the opposition, AEK have made a fairly strong start to the new season. They sit fourth in the Super League table after six games played and have yet to lose a match, taking 14 points. They have scored the second-highest number of goals after Panathinaikos. That said, the numbers are slightly skewed, with eight of those goals coming in one game against Panserraikos.
In the Champions League, they are 20th at the moment. They won their first game against LASK 1-0, but then lost 3-1 to Shakhtar Donetsk.
City obviously have much greater quality, but there are still AEK players to be wary of. Midfielder Răzvan Marin has made a big impression so far having made four assists. And Barnabas Vargas and Luka Jovic have both scored four goals each.
