Nigerian Afrobeats star and entrepreneur Mr Eazi has sent ripples across the internet with a surprising disclosure about his brush with professional football. The ‘Banku’ music pioneer revealed he once received a contract offer from English giants Chelsea Football Club, a pivotal moment that occurred before his close friend and former academy mate, John Obi Mikel, embarked on his illustrious career with the London club.

Speaking during an interview on The Beat 99.9 FM, footage of which began circulating online on Monday, October 26, Mr Eazi detailed the incredible opportunity. Both he and Mikel, he explained, were training at the same football academy in Nigeria when Chelsea approached him with a professional playing contract.

However, the singer, born Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade, chose a different path. He articulated that his decision stemmed from a profound understanding of his true calling. While acknowledging his footballing ability, Mr Eazi felt his heart lay firmly in music. Crucially, he also recognized that football represented Mikel’s sole avenue for success and passion, leading him to step aside.

This decision proved to be a career-defining moment for both individuals. Mikel went on to spend 11 years with Chelsea, securing an impressive trophy haul including the Premier League title and the UEFA Champions League, solidifying his status as one of Nigeria’s most celebrated footballers. Meanwhile, Mr Eazi carved out an equally remarkable legacy in the music industry, pioneering the distinctive Banku sound, establishing the impactful emPawa Africa initiative to foster emerging African talent, and building a formidable reputation as an astute entrepreneur and investor.

The singer’s candid recollection has resonated widely across social media platforms. Users have lauded Mr Eazi’s humility, self-awareness, and the evident warmth of his enduring friendship with John Obi Mikel, celebrating two individuals who found success by staying true to their unique paths.

As of Tuesday morning, neither Chelsea Football Club nor John Obi Mikel had issued a public comment regarding Mr Eazi’s intriguing revelation.
