The Flamingos of Nigeria have advanced to the semi-finals of the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Venezuela on Sunday night.
The quarter-final encounter remained tightly contested throughout, with disciplined defending from both sides and standout saves by the Venezuelan goalkeeper keeping the game goalless for most of the duration.
The breakthrough came in the 88th minute when Oluebube Umejiaku won a penalty for Nigeria. Following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, Azeezatt Oduntan converted the spot kick in the 89th minute to seal the victory for the Flamingos.
Nigeria will face Brazil in the semi-finals, after the South American side secured their spot with a 2-1 win over China.
