Nigerian footballer hospitalised after head injury in Spain

Nigerian footballer Quadri Liameed was hospitalised after being knocked unconscious by a kick to the head during a Spanish second-division encounter between his club, Sabadell, and Albacete.

The 24-year-old midfielder sustained the injury in the 42nd minute of the match played at the Carlos Belmonte Stadium on Saturday, October 31.

The incident occurred when Albacete forward José Corpas attempted a volley but accidentally struck Liameed in the head as both players challenged for the ball.

The impact left the Nigerian midfielder collapsed on the pitch and briefly unconscious, prompting medical personnel from both teams to rush onto the field to attend to him.

Liameed was subsequently fitted with a neck brace, carried off on a stretcher and transported by ambulance to Hospital Quirón Santa Cristina for medical examination.

Corpas was shown a straight red card for the challenge, while the match was suspended for approximately nine minutes to allow medical personnel to attend to the injured player.

Sabadell confirms positive medical results

Following the incident, Sabadell confirmed that Liameed had regained consciousness and was undergoing medical examinations, with the initial test results described as positive.

In an update published on its official X account on November 1, the Spanish club announced that the Nigerian had been discharged from hospital after his medical tests returned encouraging results.

“The best of the news has arrived!

“@Qlimeed has received medical discharge after all the tests have come out well and will return tonight to Sabadell!

“We want to thank the medical services of @AlbaceteBPSAD for the help received at all times,” the club stated.

The former Nigeria Under-20 international subsequently returned to Sabadell by car, accompanied by a member of the club’s medical staff.

Father provides update on recovery

Liameed’s father, Hajji Gafar, also provided an update on his son’s condition, expressing relief over the medical reports received from the Spanish medical team.

According to Bsnsports, he confirmed that the midfielder was in stable condition and was expected to undergo a Buffalo Concussion Bike Test (BCBT) within 48 hours.

“My son is now in a stable condition and is expected to undergo a Buffalo Concussion Bike Test (BCBT) within the next 48 hours. The Spanish medical team attending to him gave me some encouraging news yesterday, and I am relieved and grateful,” he said.

He also disclosed plans to travel to Spain within 10 days to visit his son and provide support during his recovery.

“I also intend to travel to Spain within the next 10 days to personally see Quadri, spend some time with him and support him through this recovery process,” he added.

Corpas faces possible lengthy suspension

Despite the dismissal of Corpas, Albacete secured a 2-1 victory over Sabadell, playing with 10 men following the forward’s red card.

According to Tribuna, Corpas could face a suspension ranging from four to 12 matches under Article 102 of the Spanish football disciplinary code if the incident is deemed to have caused serious injury.

However, the final punishment is yet to be determined by the Spanish Football Federation’s Disciplinary Committee.

Liameed’s football journey

Born in Lagos on April 8, 2002, Liameed began his football career with Lagos-based 36 Lion FC before moving to Spain to pursue his professional career.

He subsequently featured for Lleida Esportiu before joining Sabadell in July 2025.

The midfielder’s latest injury has raised concerns among his club and supporters, although the positive medical reports and his discharge from hospital have provided encouragement as he continues his recovery.
