On 8 July 2026 Manchester United confirmed 15 new first-year scholars, and no form gets a player onto that list. The club's own help page says “We do not hold open trials”. A United scout has to assess a boy first, and players outside the UK can be considered only on a scout's recommendation.
That is the honest answer. It is not what most pages ranking for this search will tell you.
| Question | What the club says |
|---|---|
| Open trials | None. “We do not hold open trials.” |
| Scholarship application | No form. Offers follow staff assessment of ability and potential. |
| Registration | Most academy players sign an Academy Registration form after being assessed. |
| Published fee | None found on manutd.com. |
| Boys based abroad | Assessment from the start of the 15th year, only if a scout or club contact recommends them. |
| Earliest signing for non-EU/EEA citizens | 18, subject to work permit eligibility. |
The club describes a network of regional scouts who watch town, district and Sunday league football and who also attend international youth tournaments around the world. Premier League rules limit how many players can be coached in each age group. Places are scarce, and the club says so itself.
The advice on manutd.com is plain. Be seen.
Join a team in good-quality competition, and from 15 to 18 play at the highest level your age band allows, because scouts follow the standard of the match as much as the player.
The Emerging Talent Program, announced in February 2020, is often quoted online as a way in. It is a local pipeline. It targets Greater Manchester and the North West, and its centre at the Aon Training Complex takes players from under 9 to under 14. Nick Cox, then Head of Academy, said at the launch: “Involving and engaging with a core of local talent is fundamental to everything we do at The Academy.” Nothing in that announcement opens a door from Lagos or Kano.
A July 2026 profile of the club's scout Sam Williams lists recent arrivals from Mali, Paraguay and Colombia. Those are boys United went looking for. They did not apply.
The club's contact page lists ticketing, membership, the museum and the Foundation. It has no academy desk.
The academy page names Under-13, Under-16, Under-18 and Under-21 teams, plus a development squad for Under-17 to Under-21. Premier League rules set age groups by age on 31 August. Boys under 17 begin the season on a scholarship. Professional terms can follow at 17.
No fee is published. None. Neither the club's help page nor the Premier League's academy hub for parents gives a price, and neither says the process is free or paid.
Be careful here.
Treat any request for money with suspicion. Nobody can sell you a United trial, a registration slot or a “confirmation letter”, because the club says it holds no open trials.
Start with visibility. Play for a serious club or academy, and keep match footage and a verifiable birth certificate in order. Our guides to football academies in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt are a sensible first step.
Tournaments can help, but read them carefully. The Gothia Cup scouting event in Cappa, Lagos, ran from 14 to 21 March 2026 for Under-18 boys. It was organised by SKF Nigeria, and country manager Oludare Oyegunle told THISDAY: “There are scouts around monitoring and the successful ones might be lucky to be shortlisted for sponsorship abroad.” The pathway is Swedish and the scouts were not named. It says nothing about United.
Then there is the rulebook.
The rule is strict. FIFA prohibits international transfers and first registrations of players under 18 by default. The exceptions include parents moving country for reasons unrelated to football, certain moves inside the EU/EEA between 16 and 18, border cases within 50 km, and humanitarian protection. Approval comes from the Players' Status Chamber of the Football Tribunal, and applications are needed from age 10. For a Nigerian-based boy, the club's own line applies: 18 at the earliest, and only with a work permit.
Fake trials are not a harmless nuisance. In October 2025, according to The Standard of Hong Kong, an 18-year-old Senegalese prospect died after accepting what looked like an invitation to an overseas trial, and Senegal's government urged players and parents to verify such invitations through official channels before anyone travels.
Walk away. Someone who asks for payment, pushes you to travel quickly or contacts you only through social media is not a scout. Do not pay. Verify first. Ask for the club's official email address, then check it against manutd.com yourself before replying to anything.
Look at the Nigerian names actually at United. Idris Fabiyi, who signed his scholarship on 8 July 2026, was born in England and is eligible for Nigeria through his parents. Noah Ajayi, 17, was born in Hamburg, has Nigerian heritage through his father, moved to England at ten, and signed a professional contract in September 2026.
Neither came through a Nigerian trial.
The lesson is not that the door is shut. It is that the route runs through scouts, not sign-up pages, and for a boy in Nigeria through excellence at home, a recommendation from someone United trust, and rules that make the move possible. Anything else is a story somebody wants to sell you.
