Tennis: Maja Chwalińska Withdraws From Tokyo Open With Thigh Injury After Wuhan Triumph

TOKYO, Japan — Polish tennis star Maja Chwalińska has withdrawn from the Tokyo Open due to a thigh injury sustained during her recent campaign at the Wuhan Open, delaying her return to competition following the biggest title victory of her career.

The withdrawal is a setback for Chwalińska, who made headlines earlier this month by winning her maiden WTA Tour title in Wuhan, China. The Polish player had hoped to build on that success at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo but has been unable to recover sufficiently to compete.

Chwalińska Confirms Injury Setback

Chwalińska revealed that she had travelled to Tokyo early to undergo physiotherapy and practise on court in an attempt to be fit for the tournament.

However, her recovery did not progress quickly enough to allow her to compete.

“I travelled to Tokyo early for physiotherapy and on-court practice, doing everything possible to recover in time, but unfortunately, I am still not ready to compete,” Chwalińska wrote in a statement posted on Instagram, according to Reuters.

Her withdrawal means she will miss an opportunity to continue building momentum after her breakthrough performance in China.

From Wuhan Champion to Tokyo Withdrawal

Chwalińska enjoyed a memorable run at the Wuhan Open, defeating compatriot Iga Świątek in the semi-finals before overcoming Britain's Sonay Kartal in the final.

She recovered from losing the opening set to beat Kartal 2–6, 6–4, 6–2, securing her first WTA Tour title.

The triumph marked a major milestone in her career and raised expectations for the remainder of her season. However, the thigh injury sustained during the tournament has interrupted her plans to compete in Tokyo.

Focus Turns to Recovery

Chwalińska will now need time to recover before returning to competitive action. No confirmed return date has been announced in the reports reviewed.

Her immediate priority will be to regain full fitness rather than risk aggravating the injury by returning too soon.

The withdrawal is particularly disappointing following her Wuhan success, but a successful recovery could allow the Polish star to resume her season with confidence.
