Valparaiso's Justus McNair called game against No. 24 Purdue on Friday, Nov. 6, sending the Boilermakers to a start they haven't had since 1976-77.
McNair dribbled down the court at Mackey Arena and hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to upset the Boilermakers 83-80 in double overtime, marking the first ranked upset of the season in men's college basketball. McNair's contested 3-pointer wasn't the craziest play of the thrilling game, either. Rakim Chaney grabbed a rebound off a missed free throw, dribbled to the corner and nailed a heavily contested 3-pointer to send the game to double overtime.
New-look Purdue is now 0-2 to start the season for the first time since 1976 and looks far off its usual level under longtime coach Matt Painter. Purdue opened the season with a 78-72 loss to Gonzaga in Las Vegas, and its loss to Valparaiso marks that program's first win over a Big Ten opponent since beating Penn State in 2004.
The Boilermakers lost four starters from their 2025-26 lineup that went to the Elite Eight, including a pair of four-year starting guards (Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer) and forward Trey Kaufman-Renn, who's now at Kansas after being the Boilermakers' go-to scorer the last two seasons.
Purdue committed 11 turnovers and shot only 5-of-28 from 3-point range in the loss. Returning center Daniel Jacobsen had a career-best night with 28 points and 10 rebounds, but the 7-foot-4 first-year starter wasn't enough to overcome his teammates' shooting woes.
Jacobsen wasn't the best player on the court in the game, though. That would be Chaney, who led all scorers with 35 points, eight rebounds and six assists on 14-of-22 shooting. The sophomore guard missed most of the second overtime after fouling out early in the final period.
Purdue led Valparaiso 32-20 at halftime, before being outscored 38-26 in the second half.
Painter, in his 22nd season at Purdue, hasn't relied on the transfer portal during his tenure, but maybe should have for the 2026-27 season. The Boilermakers' starting lineup consists of returning starter C.J. Cox, three bench players from last season and Princeton transfer Caden Pierce, who scored two points on 1-of-5 shooting in 41 minutes of action against Valparaiso.
Eight of Purdue's nine players that played on Friday night were recruited out of high school in typical Painter fashion. The longtime coach's process has worked in recent years, with trips to the Sweet 16 or further in four of Purdue's last five seasons.
But this Purdue team is far from its Big Ten championship squad from last season, and it has some work to do going forward. There's still plenty of time left to get things turned around, but perhaps Painter is re-thinking his roster-building tactics.
