Tottenham star Ben Davies is already preparing for a multitude of career options after he hangs up his boots, including a transition that could potentially pave the way for him to continue working at Spurs.

The 33-year-old defender is certainly not your average footballer, as shown by the array of things he has already taken an interest in while still playing the game at the highest level.

Davies has studied economics and business through the Open University and was appointed to the Football Association of Wales (FAW) Council in August 2026.

The Tottenham defender has also been coaching some youth teams in the Spurs academy in his off time and has completed his UEFA A License in preparation for a potential career in coaching.

Tottenham star Ben Davies is also preparing to move to boardroom level

As an FAW Council committee member, the Spurs man serves as the dedicated representative for Welsh players. Davies attended a meeting at Dragon Park in Newport this week as part of his role with the Welsh FA, which was convened to shape the nation’s footballing culture.

During the meeting, the Tottenham man discussed his willingness to act as a potential bridge between those who execute the strategy on the pitch and those who draft it in the boardroom at football clubs.

When BBC Sport caught up with the defender in the meeting and asked about his aspirations to move into the administrative side of football, he said: “I don’t see myself doing nothing after football, and it’s a great learning experience as well to see how it all works behind the scenes in the world of football. This is a great start to that end. It’s hard to put a nail in it on where your future lies.

“If something falls in my lap in the coaching world, then maybe that would be my route. But I want to use my expertise and what I have learned in the best way I can, and I don’t know what angle that takes after football yet, but I’d like to be someone who, maybe at some point, crosses that divide from a player to the boardroom or the front of the office kind of role because I haven’t seen too many players over the years that have done that.”

He added (BBC): “Firstly, it’s an absolute honour and privilege to play football for Wales. Because of that honour and how much I’ve loved doing it – and still love doing it – you want to give back in any way you can. If I can help using my stature and position as a player to help Welsh football, I’m more than happy to do that.

“There are a lot of people in that room with a lot of experience that know a lot about what goes on behind the scenes in football. [They] probably know a lot more than I do. I’ve only been a player. But ultimately, I’m here with a player’s voice.

“Having played at the highest level for a long time, I want to be able to maintain those standards, bring us up to the levels that I’ve seen in the world of football, maintain us, and put us in a good place going forward.”

On the idea of retirement, Tottenham’s Ben Davies said: “Look, hopefully [retirement] is still quite a few years away. I feel fit. I love playing football, and I want to play as long as I can. But you’re a long time retired in this game, and I don’t see myself just doing nothing after football.

“For me, it’s a great learning experience as well – to see how it all works behind the scenes in the world of football. This is a great start. It’s more than just a role for me; it’s great to be able to give back as much as I can to a footballing country that’s given me so much.”

Retirement may still be a few years away for the Welshman though, as Tottenham are considering extending Davies’ contract by an extra year.

Ben Davies and former teammate considered for executive roles at Spurs

Back in May, The Times reported that Spurs are looking to make more executive appointments over the coming months.

It was revealed that Tottenham were considering bringing in executives with footballing knowledge and those who understand what it means to represent the club.

The report claimed that Ben Davies and Toby Alderweireld are being considered as potential appointments, with the Welshman said to be highly regarded internally at the club.

Speaking in the summer, Alderweireld revealed that he would be willing to take an executive role at Spurs after spending six seasons at the club as a player.

When asked if a boardroom role at Tottenham would be of interest, the Belgian, who hung up his boots last year, said: “Yeah, for sure. It’s up to someone else to decide if I have the qualities and about the right position but I would do everything in my power. I think I have good connections with the fans and the club. I know the club, I played there for six years. If Tottenham need help, I’m there, why not?”
