Sporting had lost their previous Champions League match against LASK

Sporting got their Champions League campaign back on track as they claimed a 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk - just one day after they sacked their head coach.

Rui Borges was dismissed on Monday after the Portuguese side's poor start to the domestic league which leaves them third, nine points off leaders Porto.

Under interim boss Tiago Fernandes, who took charge of just one training session before Tuesday's tie at Stamford Bridge, Sporting broke the deadlock in the 59th minute when Issa Doumbia slotted a smart finish past Dmytro Riznyk.

Kaua Elias should have opened the scoring for Shakhtar in the first half but the Brazilian skied a close-range effort over the bar, and he was denied by a sublime save from Sporting goalkeeper Rui Silva after the break.

The Ukrainian champions have not played at their Donbass Arena home in Donetsk since 2014 and have staged their home European fixtures in Poland, Germany and Slovenia since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

This season they are playing their four home fixtures in the Champions League at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea's ground available because the club are not involved in European competition this season.

Shakhtar, who have four points from their opening four games, return to Stamford Bridge to play Fenerbahce in their next Champions League outing on Wednesday, 25 November.

Sporting, with three wins from four games, are also in action against Manchester United that evening as they look to boost their hopes of a top-eight finish.
