Premier League club, Chelsea, have confirmed that goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, will be out of action for at least three weeks and would miss the sides games against Manchester United and Liverpool following an injury he sustained during the team’s match against Everton.
The Blues revealed that Martinez had an operation carried out on him after the incident which has him concussed and would now begin a recovery process which would make him a bystander in the big games as the club look to maintain their two-game winning run in the league.
“Thanks to everyone for the messages. The operation went well. The most important thing is that we won, and kept a clean sheet. In a few weeks we’ll be back.” the Argentine said on the hospital bed on Sunday.
The goal custodian was stretched out of the action away at Everton, and straight to hospital, after breaking he broke his jaw while bravely coming out to parry a cross by former Chelsea player, Kieran Dewsbury-Hall, and clashed on opposition defender, Jarrad Branthwhaite, the latter who also needed medical team intervention after blood gushed out of his mouth.
Martinez was replaced by young Mike Penders, with Chelsea leading by a lone goal by Pedro Neto after one hour played, and the Blues rallied on to maintain a clean sheet, hugely helped by fine saves by the substitute, after which Neto made it two nill one minute left of the regulation time.
Penders would now be in goal in absence of Martinez starting from next Saturday’s London Derby in the Premier League against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.
“Mike has personality. He’s brave and we have full trust with him. He did well when he came on,” said manager, Xabi Alonso.
“He played in the cup games and whenever he’s needed. Like the other players, whenever they are needed they can perform.
“It’s all about the squad hat all the players feel important and can have their moment whenever they are needed, and that’s very positive.”
